Oriented vs. Orientated
Is it just me, or has the word "orientated" seem to have replaced the word "oriented" out there? And am I the only one who thinks "orientated" just sounds stupid? Is one right over the other one? This kind of thing drives me crazy.

^^^ I agree 100%. I prefer the former, the latter sounds clumbsy.
But it does seem to be pretty common now.

It really doesn't matter: it's a matter of personal taste. Orientated is currently preferred use in general British use. Oriented is prevalent in technical use, and in the US.

My wife and her co-workers all use orientated. Drives me nuts. They're nurses and spend a good deal of their time at work each month helping out with orientations for new employees.

No, you're right. It sounds awful, and it looks awkward in print. Still, I'm glad none of the people I've corrected over the years have referenced askoxford.com...

I have a friend who swears "orientated" is the correct spelling and pronunciation for "oriented". It shouldn't bug me but it does.

If you turn something, you orientate it.
That is it's orientation.
Therefore it is orientated.

I love it when people say things like "I was disorientated." I usually respond with "Someone took away your training?"

I don't like orientated either. It reminds me of when people turn conversation into "I conversated with Bill".

This reminds me of the lady at work that asks if you are "drownding". I think she also told me she electrocuted herself. I looked amazed and called her Jesus and she didn't get it.

To be fair, the more common use of the word probably occurs with 'disorientated'... the word oriented doesn't seem to come up in common conversation (that I've had), though disoriented/tated does quite often.

No you certainly are not the only one. I think it sounds stupid as well. My says it all the time, but she is coming around. Also instead of saying finicky, she says finickity, which also drives me nuts.

In North America if someone turns something they don't say orientate...and that's why it sounds so strange to us. Thanks for showing the specific meaning to us.

Thank you for pointing this out. I hate when people use orientated, drives me up the wall. Sadly, it seems here to stay.
