Default teens responsible for hit and run on 5 year old girl

http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...1e0c56&k=72007

Their daughter Kauther was crossing the street when a driver speeding up to 70 km/h through a playground zone struck the child.
Witnesses said the driver stopped the car and looked over his shoulder at the screaming family huddled over the unconscious girl before speeding off.

Tips came pouring in after media reports on the girl, who was rushed to hospital with wounds to her head and face, police said.

That certainly doesn't sound like they had pangs of guilt and turned themselves in.

Cars are always speeding through that playground zone, and with all the recent development that has gone on around there it is harder to realize that there even is a playground.

I've had drivers give me the finger when I slowed down and they decided to go flying by at that spot. The Westwinds Park has a big wading pool and tennis courts so in the summer it is a very busy spot.

Some guy roared past me in a school zone after riding my bumper a few nights ago.. I had read this in the paper that day, and even though I was in the middle of the road since I could tell he was going to do it, he still managed to get past. I was very close to wanting to clip his bumper.

As much as I don't want to deflect blame from the driver, on Global the other night they said that the kid darted out from behind a parked car. Just saying that so many times we say "Oh that driver/car thief! Bad person!" When in fact this could be turned into a lesson for those who have kids to always teach them respect for cars on the road; especially if you live on a busy residential street.

ok this is how I look at it..

-teen and his buddies steal a car

-teen doesnt even have a learners license

-teen is going 70/h in a 30 zone

-teen full on hits a little girl

-teen sees she is badly hurt and flees

I agree that it is not always the driver fault and kids need to be wary of cars. But from the article,

Their daughter Kauther was crossing the street when a driver speeding up to 70 km/h through a playground zone struck the child.

Chances are the speed limit on the non-playground zone road was 50 km/h or 60 km/h. This is a little excessive for the road to say the least. The whole idea of a playground zone is for drives to watch out for children crossing the street and darting in and out of traffic. I do see your point, but in this case I would the majority of the blame on the driver. But if this does serve as a wake up call for parents to remind their children of the dangers of the road then I guess that is good. Unfortunate that someone, especially a child, had to get hurt in the process.

I hope the driver doesn't get a license for a long long time.

And just to be clear, I would say that I agree with you- it is the driver's fault.

It's just that it's good to teach kids to look out for themselves and not to rely on other people. Just the other day I almost got smoked by a truck while I had the walk sign; he wasn't going to stop on a right turn on red. Because I was watching out for him; I avoided the collision. He slammed on his brakes and stopped about 4 feet past where I had been.

It's better to be safe than to be in ICU thinking to yourself "well, at least I was in the right."

As a driver, I watch out for kids. Many drivers don't; as the anicdotes in this thread indicate. If we can use this unfortunate incident to prevent one other kid from getting hurt; then maybe we can find some good in this very bad thing that happened.
