Default What day is Next Sunday ?

I'm having an argument with my sister over what day "Next Sunday" is.

So today is Saturday, April 21. Would "Next Sunday" refer to Sunday April 22, or Sunday April 29?

I contend that Next Sunday refers to Sunday April 29 -- if I wanted to refer to April 22, I would've said "This Sunday," or "Tomorrow." She retorts that a week is from Sunday through Saturday, therefore "This Sunday" would mean Sunday April 15, and "Next Sunday" should mean the Sunday of the next week, i.e. tomorrow, Sunday April 22.

But that makes me wonder: Pretend today is tomorrow, then what day would "Next Saturday" be? To most people, I think, it would probably be Saturday April 28; but my sister still contends that Next Saturday would mean Saturday May 5, and that April 28 would indeed be This Saturday.

So, to anybody who is still following -- who is right? And which do you say/use?

HAHA, I've had this argument plenty of times.

I've done it with a weekday, on a weekend.

So, on saturday, I say next monday, referring to a monday 9 days away, the next one, not the one coming up.

Kind of like next week, refers to the one you're currently on. Whether or not their are days left in the week it means the one after.

Anyway, sorry to highjack, but I've had similar experiences and no clarification but been made fun of a lot.

Good luck on your quest!

I say "tomorrow" supercedes "next Sunday" so if you mean Sunday as in tomorrow, say tomorrow, otherwise next Sunday, means the one after tomorrow.

Tomorrow is this Sunday. This Sunday is tomorrow. Next Sunday is the 29th.

It becomes tricky when it is Thursday, and someone says "next Wednesday". Since Wednesday was just yesterday, Wednesday seems days away. So if you are thinking ahead to next week, "next Wednesday" seems reasonable.

In summary, use the date whenever possible.

Personally, I think your sister needs to be introduced to logic and reality. While what she says technically has some merit, it has absolutely no basis in the real world. You win.

Agreed with those above. It is a figure of speech- short for "not this Sunday, but the next Sunday after that."

Add in accountability and he'd be asking her to become a man!!

Not my line, see as good as it gets, or a post by Fotze from a thread last week.

I agree tommorrow or Sunday is the 22nd, and Next Sunday is the 29th. When you add next as an adjective to a day of the week, you're fast forwarding past the one thats scheduled next. So Next Monday is the 30th of April and Monday is the 23rd. They should legislate that into law.

Well, I guess I will disagree here. To me next means, well, next. So next sunday (being that today is sat) is tomorrow. If you say next Wed, that's the 25th or whatever.

If you are meaning say Sun 28th, then to me it should be a week from now/tomorrow type of thing.

But anyways to me that is what makes sense. But I don't think I am in the majority here, so I would likely discard what I think .

Edit to add: its the same thing when you are driving. When you say "take the next right"....to me that is literally the right coming up (i.e. the literal next one). You don't say "take the next right" and expect the person to wait until the 2nd right.

Again, thoguh, that's just me....

Right. But we've said that already. In the context of days of the week, next means the 2nd one coming up. I'm not aware of another context where we use next to really mean "second next." But for days of the week; we do.

You do when you are already at the cusp of the turn-off, which Saturday is to Sunday. You would say turn at THIS exit.

Weird, I had the same argument last week. I don't remember what side I was on, or who ended up being right. I say if your sister is hot, then she's right.

Depends which day of the week it is. If it's less than half a week away, next Sunday is the one following this Sunday. If it's more than half a week away, next Sunday is the one within the next 7 days.

If it is Saturday I typically would assume the 29th. Otherwise the person would have said "tomorrow". But Friday is iffy. Wednesday or thursday would be confusing.

If "next Sunday" is the 29th, is "Sunday after next" be the first Sunday in May?

I'm with you on that, I think. The way I express it is that 'This Sunday' always refers to the closest Sunday. If it's Wednesday, 'this Sunday' is in the past, if it's Thursday, 'this Sunday' is in the future. Otherwise, you have the same problem with the past, but with 'last Sunday' rather than 'next Sunday'. If we simply attach 'this' to both the preceeding and following Sunday, then you get conversations like this:
"What did you do this Sunday?"
"Oh, not much, but I've got big plans for this Sunday."

If this conversation occurs on a Tuesday, it should appear as follows:
"What did you do this Sunday?"
"Oh, not much, but I've got big plans for next Sunday."

If it occurs on a Thursday, it should appear like this:
"What did you do last Sunday?"
"Oh, not much, but I've got big plans for this Sunday."

Hmm, what if you're driving along with someone and they ask is it the turn coming up?

My response would be, "no, it's the next one"

But there is where the point of reference is from.

How about if I ask you "Is it the third left turn?" and you reply, "no, it's the next one." am I to take it that 1st left turn or the 4th left turn?

the 29th. I've been going over this all day too. People keep asking me when I'm moving, and all day I've said next Sunday. Everyone I spoke with seemed to understand that I was moving on the 29th and not tomorrow.
