Default What to do on a long flight?

So here I am two days away from a long trip to India. I have my good ol' ipod to keep me entertained on the flight but any good ideas of things to bring along on a flight that is about 24 hours in total (Calgary to London to Bombay)?

Also, I have a 11 hour stopover (kill me now) in London with nothing to do. Any ideas of what I could do in 11 hours in London?

I believe both Gatwick and Heathrow have easy access to the Tube. In which case (assuming you're there morning or mid-day), take a quick run to Trafalgar Square, which also faces National Gallery. Entrance into any and all museums in London are free, and you probably want to spend as little money in London as possible heh.

Take the train into central London . . . . . Westminster Abby is cool if you're a history buff . . . . . Nelson's tomb is in St. Paul's Cathedral I believe . . . . Trafalgar Square is interesting for people watching . . . . the Tate Modern is interesting . . . . the National Portrait Gallery . . . . The British Museum . . . . . Harrods in Kensington . . . . . . take a nap in Hyde Park, Regents Park . . . .

Take your PSP for those long flights . . . . . I've got one to Rome coming up as well . . . . . or just hope they've got three really good movies and you've got two really good books.

EDIT: You have to really go looking for it because its out of the way, but from the London Eye you can walk to the Imperial War Museum - about 15 minutes I think through some twisting streets - which has some fairly fascinating things, including a Buzz Bomb, trench displays, tanks, a Spitfire, etc, etc.

On a flight?!

Personally, whenever I'm on a flight for longer than say 4 hours, I get really trashed beforehand and just sleep during the flight.

I had my laptop on my last flight... but since it only lasts about 2.73 episodes of 24, that didn't last too long. Some newer planes have power plugs under the seat... thats assuming you even have a laptop.

Inflight movies are always good.. even if you hate the movie, it at least keeps you occupied for a while..

Join the mile high club.

Sleeping pills / excessive booze

I would almost go out and see some of London (if you can) as 11 hrs in an airport blows goats..

Best thing to do is sleep...I had a 14 hour Cape Town to London flight a few months ago, sleep is the only thing that can make the flight feel shorter. Hopefully you will have the personal video monitor so you can control your own in flight entertainment - that helps a lot too.

Don't stay at the airport in London. Heathrow is a disaster, too many people and not enough space. Take the advice of the other posters and go into the city and have a look around.

I take a sleeping pill after the first or second meal, and chase it down with a few ryes. You're pretty much guaranteed 4 hours of sleep that way, and you can fill the rest of the time eating, watching movies, or wandering the aisles. If you're on a flight that's not full and has an empty row in the center of the plane with 3 seats, you can switch seats as soon as the plane doors close. Swipe all the pillows and make a bed.

You can also get day rooms in almost all airports, or pay most first class lounges for entry. That way you can eat, shower, watch TV and hang out comfortably instead of wandering the cess pool of humans that is Heathrow.

I've done that Cape Town - London flight! I was on SAA and they had personal screens so I watched lots of movies which helped kill the time. Hopefully Fobulous' plane has the same option.

I also had one day in London. You can hop on the tube from Heathrow and hit any part of London. I went on the London Eye which is fairly central and is close to many other sights. You definitely want to avoid shopping there-man, is that city expensive!

Bring a pair of track-pants/yoga pants, comfy t-shirt, thick comfy socks etc...change into the trailer-park gear just before boarding (in the washroom or people will think you are odd) and you will be sooo much more comfortable...

Bring ear-plugs, blinders (eye-cover things), and sleeping pills....

drink fluids...and try to get a head start on the jet lag.

and see if you can get to a football game in london!

Challenge every one around you on the plane to a game of Strip Poker. I was on a flight from London to Vancouver once and about two rows behind me there was a group of like 7 young bussinessman who had a game. They did fail to lure any females into the game though. Like a trainwreck I had to look back every few minutes and I did see one guy get down to the ginch stage.

Of course this was in the old days where they served copious amounts of booze on international flights.
