Lent?
I'm not Catholic but I gave up coffee for Lent. I just wanted to try it out.
Frankly - it sucks. I got a $25 gift card for Starbucks I can't use till Easter.
It's 4:19 on a Friday after a tough week (would have been tougher without the Flames winning), and I am dying for some Java.
Anybody else do Lent? What did you give up? Sticking with it?

I gave up candy which has been difficult as I'm a bit of a sugar addict (especially for little sour soothers). So far, so good, though.
I'm a bit of a Runaway Catholic but I try to do something every Lent in the hope of self-improvement.
One year I gave up caffeine and everyone commented how calm I was.

I gave up eating liver. Actually, I gave up liver for lent in about 1982. It worked out so well I've done it every year since. In fact, I haven't even eaten liver since, well, umm, 1970-something.

I gave up coffee one year. The first two weeks were awful. Can't imagine what a heroin addict must go through. Withdrawal sucks. But after those two weeks I was fine. Shortly after Easter, however, I was back on/off the wagon...

Lent is the period before Easter (40 days I think). It's supposed to be to recognize Jesus's trials and tribulation during his retreat to the desert. Catholics (and maybe some other Christian sects) are supposed to give up something important to them during this period. In my family, it was fasting. We wouldn't eat after dinner, and we'd give up meat on certain days. I can't quite remember the details, because I haven't been a practicing Catholic since I was child.
I still consider myself a "Catholic" in the cultural sense, but I don't believe or follow the dogma enough to bother sacrificing anything at Lent.

I gave up coffee last year. Haven't had a drop in over 12 months.
The easiest way through it is to get a thermos, and fill it with green tea every morning. That way you can sit at your desk, sipping something hot with caffeine in it, thereby fooling your brain into thinking you're drinking espresso. After a few month ween yourself off the tea.
Tea is cheaper, but it stains your teeth way faster. Supposed to be better for you too.
