I caught Primetime on ABC last night and they had an hour long special about the sexual habbits of Americans. It was pretty interesting. The study has some insightful information about fundamental differences between men and women, young and old people, married couples and singles.

Some of the numbers I found to be a little on the conservative side. How do you think Canadians would compare in a similar study? Check it out.

You know, one thing that's a statistical enigma to me in these surveys (looking specifically at Total Number of sex partners, midway down the first page):

24% of men have had sex with 11 or more partners, but only 10% of women report similar levels of activity. Infact, if you add up the totals using the low-end numbers, the males, in total, report having 5.93 partners on average. The women, by comparison, report having 3.86 partners. Now, that's a huge statistical difference, over 2. There are 2 possible theories that one can draw from these numbers:

The first theory: A significant portion of all male sex is homosexual--the difference between the male and female figures is 2.07, and the only explanation for men having more encounters than women is gay sex. You're left with 2.07, which means that on average, American males have had two gay partner and four female partners. It also means that one in every five sexual encounters in the US is homosexual. And that's ignoring the probability that a small number of that 3.86 number for the women is made up of lesbian partners, a fact which would push the male homosexual number even higher.

The second, and more likely theory: Men always inflate their number of partners by one on average, likely including second/third base encounters, while women round down, always neglecting to include those one or two guys who weren't very memorable, anyway.

There could be a 3rd reason.

You're making it sound like a woman can only be slept with by one man.

I would say the difference in percentages is because more women are picky about their partners than men are, but that is not to say that there are not some women who have higher totals than men. They would be harder to find when doing a survey. That would bring the men's totals higher.

An overly simple way of saying it is that the men are sleeping with the same women.

Well all those partners have to go somewhere... And yeah theres a big difference... kinda disturbing really... the only thing I can think of is that a much smaller portion of women (say 2-3% of all women) have extreme (off the charts) numbers of sexual partners - this could easily be explained at bars... females who want sex all the time have a much easier time getting some than men do, frequently men who would have brought a willing woman home go home empty handed, whereas the woman would have a much easier time finding a partner.

That's exactly it. When I was younger and used to go out on the "prowl", there were certain females who my friends and I all knew had slept with half the men in the building, but probably 90% of the women in the place were not easy at all.

Maybe I've travelled in a fast crowd (I don't think so) but that cheating business, I find that hard to believe. Only 1 in 5 have cheated? Bah, I don't buy that.

I guess it depends on what a "committed" relationship is. Probably depends on who you ask as well, the "cheater" or the "cheated". I heard of this guy, Hank, who cheated on his girlfriend numerous times while she was away tree-planting. Apparently, she felt they were in a committed relationship, but he didn't think so.

Maybe the numbers difference is that some men thought they were about to have sex with a women, only to find out that it was a man, man. Perhaps Cross dressers are skewing the stats so that the 2.07 difference in average is nothing more than cross dressers getting the better of men.

Fifteen percent of men — and three in 10 single men age 30 and older — have paid for sex. About half of women say they've faked an orgasm.
Wow

Fourteen percent of adults (and twice as many single men) have had sex in a threesome

Overall, women report an average of six sex partners in their lifetimes; men, 20. But a better gauge of sexual activity for most people is the median, the midpoint between the high and low: Women report a median of three sex partners; men, a median of eight.
Quote:
The averages are higher because a small number of individuals — especially men — report a very large number of partners. Five percent of the men in this sample reported having had 99 or more sex partners, including four who reported 200, three who reported 300 and one who reported 400. Among women, one percent reported 99 or more partners; the high was 100 (reported by two women).

Would this apply to gay folks, straight folks, or whom exactly?? Bi-sexuals?

Pretty strange reaction to a show delving into a topic that every single person alive has some interest in for one reason or another.

I think YOU need to gve it a rest, especially when its very likely that literally MILLIONS of people tuned in to watch this show.

A LARGE reason for the difference could be paid-sex. If 15% of men have paid for sex, and 30% of singles over 30, and those paid for sex have 100+ partners it starts to add up. How many prostitutes were sitting at home waiting for ABC pollsters to give them a call? How many even have land line phones hooked up?

Also, many men will have sex with more liberal foreigners in other countries while traveling, not to mention the sex trades in many other countries.

Mostly surprised by how unadventerous in mind, not so much action, many are...
