you can get amazing prints from a cheap printer......the key is great paper. You wont get photo quality stuff from regular stock, but if you use the stuff they recommend, the results are nothing less than photo-paper quality.
The thing about inkjet printers is the the cartridges, but if you get refills done, they save you a lot of money.
Personally, I recommend Epson or Canon printers, as they have great quality prints ( with the right paper remember! ), and you can get refills at many local palces.
Btw, a laser printer won't get you as good quality color photo prints as an inkjet. I recommend lasers printers for documents, or jobs that dont dont require high-quality renderings. They are great economically for that, so it really depends on your requirements.

I used to work for Lexmark, so of course I would say get a Lexmark even now
But Canons have always impressed me as far as photo quality goes, the only brand I'd avoid is HP - their prints are garbage, they waste a TON of ink, and their support is absolute crap too.
Also, if you get a Lexmark, PM me, as I have a TON of ink left over that I'm willing to get rid of for real cheap to clear up some cupboard space!

I was in the same boat that you are when it comes to buying an annual printer.
What I opted to do is shell out for a great photo printer one year and then a laser printer for the b/w jobs. It is an initial shockfor all of the money up front but I've been going on 2 years now just between the two printers and all is good.
As for the printers, I also got an Epson similar to the one Inferno mentioned. (despite it being a previous model year) and the other one is a lower end samsung which is really similar to this:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetai...33&newdeptid=18
Everyone has their own situation, but I hope this helps.
p.s. If you go to the sunridge location of futureshop, be careful of who you go to. I bought a video card yesterday and was making conversation with the guy by asking what the return policy was. He gave me an earful about how it wastes time, money, futureshop time money...blah blah...I was pretty steamed as to what he was trying to imply and tried looking for the guy's name on the receipt but can't find it.
Good luck.

Kind of glad to see I'm not the only one that goes through printers like that. What is it with that crap? Can't a reasonably priced printer be made to last more than a year?? I dont even use the damn things much either. Gotta say though, while they worked (gone through epson, canon, hp), they worked really well for printing photos, and the most I ever spent was maybe $150.00 for one. Like table said though, the trick is good paper. In my experience, by the time I calculated cost for paper, ink, and printer itself, getting them printed by a finisherwas much cheaper, even though doing at home is kind of fun.

The printer I have right now (Epson 777) still works fine after a few years of having it but my scanner is pretty old and both take up alot of space so I decided to get a printer/scanner. I saw the deal at Futureshop and couldnt pass it up.
