Ugh. Being in a gang is so 1980's.
I guess if you have no education and no aspirations you might as well be bad.

Yeah, I saw a bit on global news about it back on Friday, I think: muslim leaders in Calgary are very concerned about it and organized a public meeting to discuss this gang. Police have said that they haven't had any reports of actual gang activity linked to the group, but they're keeping a close eye on it. Right now the biggest concern is the recruitment potential of the gang, as opposed to gang activity.

This is kind of a strange thread. Is this a rumour or something? Something you've witnessed? Is it actually a serious concern or is it a group of teenage brown kids who think their thugs, like most in NE Calgary tend to? You definitely need to provide more info on this.

Are they actually proclaiming themselves as a 'Muslim gang'? Or is that what the newspapers are calling them?
Gangs are usually of one ethnic group anyway, but I don't see the media calling them 'Buddhist gangs' as opposed to 'Asian gangs'.

I'm thinking of starting a "non-devout Catholic" gang in the SW. We'd only meet up at Christmas and Easter. Who's with me?

Probably just a bunch of stupid kids trying to make themselves more important than they are. Why would this only be a N.E. problem. Wouldnt they want recruits from all over Calgary?

Like I said, I'll try and find an online article about it, (I saw it on the news) but apparantly it's a little more srious than "some kids saying they're a gang". plus, like the one poster pointed out, it's the recrutment possiblilties that is kind of scary. I can't remember if the police had commented on it (I'm pretty sure they did) But I don't believe Global would pick up the story if it wasn't at least a little troubling.

Probably, I'm just rehashing what I heard on the news at this point, and they specified that they were roaming the NE.

So what kind of activities are they involved in? General street crime? Any potential of terrorist activities here?

They said right now it's mostly muggings, and small crimes. Bu tit's the potential that worries me. Mostly because they are based on religion, and we all know how powerful religion can be, as far as indoctrination, and violence goes. I didn't mean to make it sound like they were already a huge gang, commiting gang activity around the city.

Thanks for finding that. Hopefully that will clear up the questions some of you had. It defintitly illustrates my point, that people are more worried about the potential, then what they are actually doing right now. Also, the part about teens being 'forced' into it, is kind of disturbing to me.

Being muslim is a not just a religious identity, but it is a cultural identity.
In Vancouver, there are Sikh gangs (which probably have a way more sophisticated level of organized crime than than typical "gangs"). Although they connect themselves by a Sikh culture, the nature of the activities have little or nothing to do with religion.
I'm sure this Muslim gang is the same.

I knew a few people from Ernest Manning and if i remember correctly there was a "crew" "gang" "group" whatever.... and they called themselves MD Muslim Domination. Im not sure if this has anything to do with whats the article is about though.

I was in a gang once. We called ourselves the Outsiders.
Darry tried to keep us all in line. You know... me, Johnny, Two-Bit, and Steve. Dallas was a loose cannon, though. Always getting into trouble.
It was all good until Johnny got badly burned in a fire. Dallas flipped out and tried to bust a cap on a Soc during one of our gang fights. He was later shot in the back by the popo, the stupid wanker.
We all learned our lesson. We hung out as brothers, but we grew as men.
