Default Edmonton man can keep $18,000 stuffed into his post office box

Justice Marguerite Trussler of Court of Queen's Bench ruled an Alberta man who found the envelope and turned it over to police should get it back instead of the money staying with the federal government.

Finders Keepers

Soooooo...if you had found the same package....opened it and found the cash, would you have turned it in? Honestly now...what would you do?

What's he going to do when the real owner comes looking for his money $? I'm sure they will not be nice people.

The only people that send $18,000 cash in the mail are organized crime. I would keep it.

Actually that's a good idea for the guy who found it. Most likely it was proceeds of a crime. By reporting it to the police, the criminals aren't going to admit to a crime.

Myself, with it being a courier envelope I would have turned it in. Last thing I'd need is it to be traced and I get asked where the money is.

8-ball and a couple nights with a REALLY nice hooker. The rest I would probably waste.

I wouldn't turn it in. No way. I know 95% of people out there wouldn't return my money to me if I lost it.

That's not necessarily true. A few years ago my folks were selling their old Yukon to a nice Korean family. The guy told him that they were going to pay half in cash and half by certified cheque. When the guy showed up to pay for it he told my folks that he didn't have time to go to the bank so they brought all cash. TWENTY SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!!!

So let me get this straight.....you didn't have time to go to the bank....so you're gonna give me 26 grand in CASH!

I'm guessing the same people who have $26 grand in cash just sitting around the house are the same kind of people who may be inclined to send cash through the mail.

I have a feeling Burton Thomas is going to be getting a house call in a few months.

As opposed to deserving to tight their money?

Normally I'd let it go, but since you're being a prick anyways...

This would be me:

"I found this open package with $2000 inside....what should I do?"

"Weird how it was suppose to be $18,000, probably the post office skimming"

I would have turned it in. $18,000 mysteriously arriving in your mail could be potentially be very dangerous.

Plus now, you can use this case in the future to argue to keep something you find (after turning it in the first place).

I dunno. I once found an empty bottle of tequila and $20 in my pants. I didn't question it.
