Edmonton: Murder Capital of Canada
Beats the Calgary Sun's headline: Edmonton Canada's Murder City. http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/Alberta/...95692-sun.html
Pitt said Alberta's surging economy drew more young men -- the segment of society most prone to violence -- to the province. Edmonton is also a hub for high-quality drugs, like highly prized B.C. pot, to be moved to the U.S. or the Northwest Territories.
Well i guess Calgary is attracting the more educated of young men to Alberta.

My brother works in Edmonton for the Cracker Cats. He phoned me this morning laughing and says to check out the front page of the Edmonton Sun if I can find one.
Front page headline, big letters... "DEADMONTON"
Certainly not a new term, but funny that they'd use it in their own paper.

perhaps Pronger was just fearing for his family's safety?
Doesn't suprise. Edmonton's coach is a criminal.

Wow. Another Edmonton bashing thread....... interesting...
I believe Calgary was also the murder capital at one point as well wasn't it?
I hate the Oilers as much as the next guy... but every single thread is about how Edmonton sucks and.... well.... it isn't good on the karma.

Edmonton does suck. I'm not sure how the Oilers have anything to do with this, though.
Bertuzzied is right, though. All the edjumacated folks are getting their degrees in Edmonton, and then moving to Calgary. It's the smart way to go. Edmonton's got the better university, Calgary's got the better jobs.

Uhhhmmm no never. Not even close. It's always been quite low, except for last year with all those gang hits. Even then we were below Edmonton who was experiencing the same sort of problem (probably the same gangs)
As far as major cities go, Vancouver and Winnipeg are usually near the top while Calgary (though it has spiked slightly the last two years) and Toronto are usually near the bottom. Edmonton has been gaining (or losing depending which way you look at it) ground quickly over the last 10 years or so I think. Regina and Saskatoon are up there too, but it depends where you cut off 'major city' I guess.
But I agree the anti-Edmonton threads and anti OIler threads are spawning quite quickly.
Maybe some call this newsworthy. They could have a point.

Are you sure about that? I know Winnipeg is/was bad, but I have heard on several occasions that Vancouver actually has one the lowest violent crime rates in Canada.

I could be wrong about the Van one, I'll look into it. Maybe it was a spike year I'm thinking off. I know there was one really bad year related to their crack district (East Hastings?)
I'll stick with it till I'm proven wrong though lol.

Well, 7 months this year and the city is at 13 homocides, well off last year's total of 44.
Keep the anti-edmonton threads coming though. Some of you guys are obsessed with Edmonton.

15 now, as another one was confirmed last night. And they had 22 at this time last year. 44 is also not what was committed inside this city, I believe the real number was 38 or 39.

Its not a bash if it is an article in the newspaper...I don't think it was meant to start off that way it just made its way to that.

edmonton's the murder capital because it's not a port city.
not body, no murders.
port cities - plenty of boats show up with phillipino, greek, yemeni etc. sailors, and on occasion a few don't come back after a shore leave.
gambling debts, drug debts, the vices of sailors, the serious trafficking of counterfeit goods - all out of port cities.
but the bodies end up anchored 50 miles out in the drink and it's not a 'murder'.
fine, edmonton's the murder capital - as in found body murders.

Well, that's not true. Nobody holds a candle to Winnipeg in that regard.

Just like the good job that you complain about? The same job that you say you are miserable about? Didn't you post a while ago for advice because your wife wants to move to Vancouver, and you asked for advice whether or not to accept a better job in Vancouver?
Edmonton may be more bluecollar, but there's lots of jobs and income here compared to the national average.
Didn't you post this a while ago?
"Calgary's not all that fantastic either, I'll agree. I'd be surprised if I'm still here in 10 years."

Oh yeah, I hate this job. Just look at me, I've been at my desk since 8:00 yesterday morning, and I've got at least 3 more hours of work to do before I can go home.
Oh, and it wasn't Vancouver. Abbotsford or Chilliwack. It's a little slower there, although these days the difference isn't all that much.
I hope I don't last here for more than 10 years, but the fact remains that if I want to earn the kind of money that I do, there are few places in this country that work better for me than Calgary. And don't misunderstand the reasons I want to leave Calgary. It's a great thriving city with tons of opportunity. It's just too fast for my liking. I hate the fact that I have to work so damn hard just to get by.
The ultimate goal? Move out of here in 5 years after I can afford to work at a lesser paying job. I'll be damned if the place I move to is Edmonton. I know the city well, and know exactly what a dump it is. Chances are I end up in a place like Vernon or Penticton. Boy do I ever love that area. Beautiful scenery, mountains, lakes, and slooooow. That's all I really want.
