Default Best Sushi in Calgary?

I'm trying to find a new favorite Sushi joint.

Ones I'm familiar with:

Sushi Tokyo - Decent all you can eat place, nothing special
Sumo Lounge - See above
Sushi Towa - Great place, Best Sushi I've had in Cow Town, a little pricey, no all you can eat
Sushi Kawa- Decent priced lunch boxes and love boats

I'm looking for a place that has good all you can eat, or is relatively well priced. (I'm a poor broke student)

There aren't many all you can eat sushi places in Calgary, and if you do find them, they're usually just ok.

The one across from SAIT has all you can eat sushi and korean bbq.

Globefish sushi is pretty good. Sadly, no all you can eat.

The best sushi I had in Alberta belongs to a beautiful female master chef named Aki. Her sushi bar is located in Canmore, and it is called Chef Studio Japan.

I've been there before and I found the sushi to be so awful that I didn't mention it. Last time I went some of the sushi still wasn't thawed properly.

Can you tell me where this globefish is and why is it so good? What to order?

Could you do the same rasta?

Every single sushi place I can remember going to in Calgary, in order of preference/frequency:

Sakana Grill - Good lunch combos, good prices, does sushi boats and steak as well. There is better sushi out there, but I really like the variety and prices at Sakana. Just all around good. (Too many damn birthdays though).

Globefish - Really good rolls, good combos, good prices, has parking.

Hana Sushi - Best all around 4th street location. Exactly average in terms of quality and price. Good combos.

Zen 8 - Expensive, but quality stuff. Don't like the combos. usually order off the sushi list. Huge pieces, usually cut my usual order in 1/2. Good variety of Tempura.

Sumo - Same owner as Sakana, minus the good lunch combos.

Towa Sushi - Expensive, closed for lunch right now (staffing problems I think). Grizzly bear sized fish pieces, unwieldy to eat. If you have to cut it, it's too damn big.

Sushi Kawa - Ok sushi, pretty good combos, somewhat small portions. 24/7 sumo wrestling on the TV.

Uptown Sushi - Inexpensive, more of a take-out kind of place, kind of like upgraded "mall sushi".

Fuji Yama - Small pieces, prices ok, occaisionally get frozen fish.

Sushi Hiro - Don't really have combos, expensive compared to others, nothing really compelling about it, other than good tuna.

Tokyo Garden - Been awhile since I've been there. Remember it being pretty average.

Sushi Boat - Sub-par, but serviceable

Sushi Box - Had a bad meal once, warm fish... blech.

Kyoto 17 - Just not good.

Towa is the best I've had.

"The one across from SAIT has all you can eat sushi and korean bbq." - One of the best for sure in terms of price/value.

It's on 14th street NW, between Kensginton Road and 5th Ave NW. (Next to Shan-Tung). I like it because they have the basics covered well, and also have a lot of neat rolls to try out.

Well, I don't get downtown much, but here are a few off-the-beaten-track places, along the Sarcee Trail corridor:

Misato Japanese Restaurant 1851 Sirocco Drive SW. (Near 17th and Sarcee.) My current favourite, this restaurant was a very pleasant surprise as the food is pretty good and it is close to where I live.

Japanese restaurant at 37th Street and 46 Ave SW. Anyone know the name of this place? I have only been there once, but I recall that what I ate was tasty and reasonably priced.

Richmond Sushi. By Canadian Tire, on Richmond Road near Sarcee. They have a little train that drives the sushi around the bar. Quality seems OK, but sometimes the rolls are sloppily assembled. Pricy, considering the above. Haven't been back since I spent $20 on lunch because I wasn't paying attention to the dish colours. Can be a good place to take young kids though, as the sushi bar provides a "no waiting" eating experience, the train is fun, and they almost always have chicken strips on it. (Don't let the kids serve themselves, we watched someone's child derail the train once.)

Sushi Ichiban at 37th and Bow. Didn't like it the last time I was there, won't return.

Richmond Sushi sucks! I mean it's ok because there's pretty much no other sushi around but it's terrible in comparison to a real Sushi restaraunt and it's more expensive than anywhere.

There is also a Sushi Ichiban on Macleod. They have an all your can stuff in your belly fest too.

Sakana Grill is my fav for downtown lunch. Their lunch boxes or whatever are good value. Agreed on the birthday thing, the singing gets old real fast.

I was OK with Sushi Club in Kensington, didn't exactly knock my socks off though.

Count me in for another person that hated Sushi BBQ infront of SAIT. That and the BBQ part was terrible, zero sauces or marinading of the meat the day I went.

One of the best kept sushi secrets: Sushi Man (used to be Sushi Sen) on 1st SW and 10th Ave. Great food, great presentation, and Japanese K1 fighting on a TV in the corner. Real Japanese staff too! It's a great place to stop in before heading to the Dome - easy walk from there.

I was looking for the same a few months back.

As already mentioned I am a fan of sushi tokyo, sushi kawa, towa, etc

Soba ten downtown on 10th ave is one I recently discovered. The service is extremely slow but the sushi is really good and fresh.

I always weigh in on these threads, even though I'm no longer in Calgary. My fave Sushi places were Sushi Miki and Sushi Hiro (the latter was the place in Calgary where Japanese business folks I knew had their parties). Sushi Hana wasn't too bad, and had good rolls.

My parents loved Misato... I've never been there myself, but my parents had nothing but praise for it... But if my parents liked it (picky eaters) then I'm sure its good.

You guys/gals know of a good spot close to the UofC? I work around there and am always looking for a good place for lunch.
