Uluru - Ayers Rock - Anyone been?

Wondering if anyone out there in CPland has been to the big red rock and area. We're planning on heading into the area to see the big red rock, The Olgas, Kings Canyon, etc.

If anyone did the area, we're curious if you drove, and if a 4WD would be necessary? Also any advice or other things to see you care to pass along would be appreciated.

Yes - on a camping bus tour up central Australia from Adelaide to Ayers rock and down again. I'm guessing since it was tour buses galore that 4wd is not required at least for the big spots.

Was over 10 years ago now, but great fun.
