Default Italian clubs relegated after match fixing

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/foot...pe/5164194.stm

“Thirteen of Italy's World Cup-winning squad play for the clubs involved”

This is huge not only for Italian domestic soccer but for the world too because it taints their world cup win. Now the question arises did the players know what they were doing in this scandal, it casts a huge dark cloud over the World Cup victory. It may actually have been better for them if they would not have won it.

As good a team as they were, IMO, their WC win was tainted anyway. The mouthing, whining, and other such stupid acts made them look like little girls. Would have been the same if Portugal won. Bunch of panzies.

Given how ridiculously the Italians reacted to anything resembling physical contact, I'm surprised Materazzi didn't go down wailing and grabbing his shin.

Good news for Inter.

Its a bit of a farce. The teams are appealing on several grounds, most notably that the defense never got a chance to state their case.

This is going to ruin Italian football for a long time. Most of the stars are going to bolt, with only a few likely to remain out of loyalty (Del Piero and Nedved for sure, maybe Cannavaro and Zambrotta).

This hardly taints the World Cup win since no players were implicated and this is a scandal of officials (club, league and referee). Its actually very unfair that any team was relegated... the individuals responsible should have been put in jail and fined heavily. Now the teams will lose millions of dollars, fans, reputation, and the league and national team themselves will be garbage for a while.

By the way, this is hardly an Italian only problem. Leagues in Germany, Greece, Belgium and I beileve England as well have had their share of scandal.

I agree on all points. As much as I would like to take something away from the Italians I dont think this verdict taints anything the players acheived.

^^ That's right. If we were to compare it to hockey (I can only relate everything in life to hockey), it would be like a Canadian NHL team being caught in a scandal. And then Team Canada winning the Gold medal. But you see, the two events aren't related. The Italians won the world cup fair and square in a separate international tournament- that was not a scandal.

I love the punishment though. Talk about taking a strong stance on cheating.

Juventis is almost guaranteed not to gain promotion next season because of that 30 point hole, which means at least two years at a lower level. Sucks to be them.

One of the few things I admire about soccer officials is that when it comes to serious stuff like this, they take no prisoners.

It's really not fair to the fans, though. Imagine if the Flames were implicated in something like this and as a result were sent to the AHL. Can you imagine how the people of Calgary would feel?

Invalid comparison since North American sport doesnt work on a promotion/relegation system.

This is no more or less fair to the fans of teams in Euro leagues that tend to bounce between divisions in soccer. The only difference is that these four teams got demoted for cheating rather than because they suck.

Not impossible... not at all. There are 126 points in Serie B... take away 30, and the best they can do is 96. The team that won last year had 81 points... to get into a playoff position for promotion, one needs to be in sixth place or better. That team last season had 66 points. They can therefore lose 10 games, plus the 10 they lose to penalty points and still make it back. Even with just Del Piero, Nedved and the reserves, they should easily sweep every Serie B club.

Plus... there is an appeal underway that apparently has some serious legal backing to it. Juventus may not lose all 30 points, hell, apparently, they might be right back to Serie A.

meh, Juve fans have nothing to complain about, their team has been near the top for many years of the wealth of the club. Think of all the other teams in Italy who can't afford to buy their way to the top like Juve has. Those are the fans who I have sympathy for.
