Default Golf club advice?

Hey guys,

I'm in the market for some new clubs. I'm pretty much a hack golfer, so I'm not looking to spend thousands on Callaway, Nike, etc....something in the $300-500 range or so

I'm just wondering what I should be looking for in a set? Any features to avoid/to try get to help compensate for my horribleness?

Any good brands out there that fit the bill? (I saw some Dunlop brand at Nevada Bob's, Jazz at SportChek that felt nice, but I'm not sure if they're appropriate for my needs).

TIA!!

My advice is try out alot of different sets.
Go to Nevada Bobs and pics out 3 or 4 different sets you like the look of then get them to let you try them out, then go from there. Feel in golf is super important

GolfTown has the best setup going with a simulator you can hit on and get a good feel for ranges on clubs (bearing in mind that sims are never 100% accurate). There is also the dreaded "but it worked great" on the range syndrome where nothing on the course works as good as it does on the range.

Alternatively, scope out a set of expensive clubs you like at Golftown and then buy the same clubs on eBay from a reputable seller. A friend of mine got a set of LH Callaway Big Bertha irons for $450 this way. Everything in my bag, including the bag itself came from eBay and I've saved a ton yet got top notch gear.

(still play like crap though - lessons 1st, then gear)

Ask some of the Canucks fans here. I'm sure they'd help you out.

I bought Fairway brand clubs from SPort Chek a couple years ago. I think I paid <$200 for the set which included driver, 3w, 5w, 2-PW. I bought a Dynatour bag, $70 or so and a $20 putter to complete it. I wouldn't say I'm good, but am better than when I first started. LOL.... I'll upgrade when I'm really good.

I was at Nevada Bobs in Westhills last week and they were selling full sets of clubs for cheap brand names and all, I would phone and see if all the stores are doing it as well

Go to Nevada Bobs and Golftown...try as many as you can...then, as IHH says, get them brand new from a reputable Ebay Shop.

I got clubs (work pays for them, so I splurged a bit) that are $1070 at Golftown including tax, for $740, which includes exchange rate, tax, duty, 2 day overnight shipping via UPS.

I almost ordered a similar set, which is/was $860 at Golftown...and that would've came out to $490 or so, all in, at your house in 2 days, from the same Ebay store/seller (proshopwarehouse).

That said, this was back in February when there weren't as many people in the market for clubs on ebay..a quick look at ebay shows prices are being bid up a bit more now...but still, to save, even after shipping, about 25-30% is nothing to sneeze at.

Hit a bunch of irons, and set aside the different ones you thought you liked (say, 3 or 4 sets). Then pick the one that you enjoy looking down on the most. I'm serious. 80% of a nice golf shot is psychological, so if you feel good looking down on your club, then you'll feel good after you hit it.

For me, I hate looking down on clubs with a really fat upper edge (most oversized clubs). That's why I can't hit Callaway clubs to save my life.

Not sure if I would go the Ebay route or not.....I've been to China and seen the knock offs they make, and they are EXACTLY the same as the originals. Just to put into perspectiv how cheap clubs are, I picked up

1 complete set of Taylor Made RAC irons (3-PW)
1 leather Ping cart bag
1 Callaway ERC Driver
1 White Hot 2 ball putter

......for $100 US. I can pretty much guarantee you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between these and the real thing even if they were side by side.

Go to Nevada Bobs or Golf Town, and do what frequitude said. Tell them what your budget is, and they'll let you try out about 4 different sets of clubs in that price range to see what feels best to you. When I bought my Cleveland irons, they taped up the heads with duct tape so you could see where you were striking the ball, and had one of their in shop pros standing beind me evaluating my swing with each brand of club. Best golf purchase I've made so far......

I'm pretty much a hacker too and last season got a set of Wilson Gear Effect clubs. They cost $200 or a bunch of HBC points to get. They are all over-sized heads so it makes a day out way less frustrating than the first set I went out with. I may not get top notch distance with them but they are a hell of a lot easier to hit straight.

I would send a letter or email to the whole Vancouver Canucks team. I am sure they have lots of advice on which clubs are good.

Does anybody know of any online stores that ship golf clubs to Canada? (Besides E-bay?) Service at some of the stores around Calgary have left quite a bitter taste in my mouth.

Cheers,

I bought my first set at Canadian Tire, fairly descent for $350 and I have been adding and garbaging clubs as I go along. I would suggest doing that because looking at new drivers for $300 can be a smidge intimidating.

A driver and a putter is the only thing I would suggest adding right away, you can hold off on the driver, but the putter is key, find one that you like, since putting is 1/2 the game normally.

I have gotten where I found a driver that I can hit a ball about 300-330 and a putter that I never more than 2 put. My real problem is sand and short chips - say 5-20 feet away from the green, I either duff em bad or miss - I know its embarassing.

Sometimes you can get lucky and find a really good set of irons that are only a couple of years old at Sports Swap. Last spring I went in and found a Titleist Vokey Wedge for $40.00.
