Default Marketing a website

got a question for all you sharp minds out there.

if you had a website, a business website, what would be the best way to market that site...not only online, but lets say, locally within a given community..

any thoughts?

ahh..good question, the topic is my website and company..

www.yellowheadtravel.com..

more specifically, I am interested in marketing it locally..but the thought of doing the usual, newspaper, radio etc..seems mundane...

am trying to come up with something newer and exciting...

as far as online is concerned...well, the website will shortly have its own online booking engine...so I guess I want to market it online as well, but again..more so locally with regards to the Province of Alberta and even more locally like West Central Alberta.

Give all of us CPers a free holiday wherever we want to go and I guarantee you we will tell the next 500000 people we meet that Yellowhead is awesome!

Can you help me with good airfare from YYC to OGG the last week of Jan 2007 for two weeks? I have some airmiles I want to use, so will require 3 more seats.

There, your marketing worked!

- cheap high quality website links will get you on google and google local for very low cost
- look for complimentary media deals with local media who have presence in both areas - eg contests run online and in print or on radio. Traditional media houses have no clue how to deal with online advertising so you can generally sometimes get deals on that part of their business
- one way to target a community (whether thats edson or a demographic) go where they go - advertise at the hockey rink or drive in - not just a bit but dominate so you're seen as the supporter of the community

great info, BILB, but I have a couple of questions for you..

not sure I follow what you mean by "cheap high quality website links"
do you mean link to them and then have them link back? I have submitted the website to google already so I am hoping that will get us some hits.

I have a ad scheduled to run with local radio here. IT covers most of the west central alberta area, so I think that will help. I think we are going to do something like a "click and win" contest online.

yup, targetting the local community is great and I have done that. I am highly visible in the local hockey rink, given that I am also the President of the Local Minor Hockey Association and we have a large rink board ad placed.

thank you again, great ideas!

For example: Google local gets its data from yellowpages.ca. A link from there can probably had for ~ 300 for a year and will almost instantly add you to the searchj mix. Links from local business sites like http://www.findabusiness.ca/ can be had for < 100 year and will get you indexed all over the search engines without worrying about the search engines themselves. None of them have unique traffic to send you, but they capture the search traffic for you without paying some schmuk thousands for SEO work.

Also: be sure to set up a google adwords account. Cheap and everything is trackable and controlable.

Great idea. Make sure they throw in links to your website from theirs - preferably their homepage. Not because you want the traffic (it'll be small) but because that link makes search engines think you must be important. If you're driving traffic to their website to 'click and win' then the rate should reflect that.
