Default Ipod question

Well my Sony minidisc player finally bit the dust, so I'm looking at different options for portable music, and I'm leaning towards an ipod, or at least a hard drive solution (as opposed to a flash memory system). One (perhaps stupid) question though...I have tons of stuff on my desktop hard drive. Will I be able to easily transfer this to an ipod?

You can transfer whatever you want as long as you enable disk mode. It sucks that Apple has removed Firewire though as you can use FireWire disks as startup disks and you cant with USB2.0 IIRC.

Probably. Did you buy the stuff on your hard-drive, or was this stuff you have ripped from your own CDs?

If they are purchased MP3s from enywhere but the iTunes music store (iTMS) then they will have digital rights management (DRM) that won't work with iPods. But if they are regular MP3s then iTunes will put them onto your iPod with no problem (some people have had issues, but it is rare).

(and yes, you CAN boot off USB if your motherboard/bios supports it)

Thanks guys...I'm specifically referring to stuff that wasn't ripped from Cds I have and that I didn't buy from an online store, but came from 'other sources'.

I have some "non-purchased" music on my ipod. Never had a problem getting it on there.

Then yes, it will work with iPod. Make sure all your MP3 tags are good.

I'm kinda bouncing back and forth wheather to get a nano or an actual ipod...don't really need the video part, so, other than the bigger drive space, what other advantages are there for the extra $ to step up to an actual ipod over the, say 2 gig nano? But ya Frank...that's the ipod I was looking @ too...does seem pretty ultra sweet.

I like it because I can put video, photos, movies, music, music videos and even work files on it. I just got it, so I'm trying to figure it all out. I'm kind of "gadget ######ed", so its taking a while....

I received the 2GB Nano for a gift. I with it had been the 4GB, but other than that I am happy with it.

Do you really need your whole collection on the player? While it might be nice to have it if you really want to hear that one song, even my 2GB has enough to run out the battery before I even hear 1/2 the songs and have to recharge it in the dock anyway.

I still lust for a nice big HD MP3 player for the reasons Frank mentions, but for pure ease of listening/portability a flash based unit is great.

I think it depends on lifestyle as well. Since our life has gone digital and we have a kid, its nice to bring video and photos that people haven't seen in such an easily portable format/veiwer.

Myself I have always used the MP3 discmans. Call me old fashoned but I like having my music on a disc; seems a little more tangible. Plus that way if somebody likes some of my music I don't have to install anything on their computer to transfer it over.

Plus I like making a mixed disc to take on a road trip. By not having access to every single song I have it forces me to become a little more creative in my music selection. And I can do a random-all without worrying about the obscure songs I have getting into the mix.

Different solutions for different tastes.

Some MP3 Players you can simply drag the music on and off (as long as you have the USB cable handy). I know some iRivers worked this way. But as Ken is implying, you can't do that with iPod music since it uses a mini database to keep track of what songs are loaded, playlists, ratings, etc.

I like the nano because I just drop it in my shirt pocket and it is light enough that I don't even notice the extra weight. And the cord is also out of the way. When listening to the computer through headphones sometimes the cord got in the way, or I would move away and yank the cord out.

BTW, I hated the iPod earbuds. They just wouldn't stay in my ears. I got a pair of Koss canal-phones and they are great.

I have the 4GB Nano, and like it a lot. I just wanted one for music only, so I didn't bother getting the video kind........although they do look pretty sweet.

I also got a dock for my Nano to use on long trips in our car. I think it was called a Griffin iTrip or something? Got it from the Apple site. About $100 and charges your iPod as well. Nice to have if you have some long trips coming up this summer.
