Necas has been solid.
I remember some on here said he was a bust before being traded to AV's

Free Agency just isn't an avenue to get top players anymore. They all stay where they are or get traded right before they would be come free agents and then sign with the acquiring team. UFA is nothing more than an avenue for slightly or massively overpaid depth players, and a few top players as they reach their twilight years.

That's a solid deal for his talent level.

Considering his history of allegedly being difficult in contract talks, I was suspicious that the Avs would get it done. Good for them, I guess.
Should have given him more, you know, so Cale could get paid here. lmao

He's a good player but lets not pretend he would be a PPG player with a team like the Flames or even the Hurricanes where he never was. Playing with MacKinnon and Makar is going to provide a bump in production. Still he's fit in and the Avs did very well in the Rantanen trade to get back a player that's nearly as productive.

When the cap escalates like this, teams can keep their players.
Flames need to sell to teams that make mistakes or need depth to get over the top.

This has always been the case which is why we’ve heard “we have to build through the draft” ad nauseam for like 2 decades.

He was leading the league in scoring early last year with Carolina. Around the 20-game mark and was a PPG when traded
He's a big kid and his skating stats say he is as fast as MacKinnon.
But this isn't a discount either

That's a fair price for a great player. All three teams did well for themselves, although they took the adventurous route to get there.

Feels rich but he'll be a PPG+ player playing with MacK and Makar.
He's also only 26.

Kind of feels like they should have just paid Rantanen the 11.5-12 he wanted if you're just going to turn around and give Necas $11.5M.
IMO Rantanen is still a better player than Necas.
Although Necas being younger makes the back end risk a bit less, but really the Avs window to win is now.

Yeah, he had 55 points in 49 games with the Canes at the time of the trade.
Funny, the Avs traded Rantanen because they said he was asking for more than he got with Dallas. Rantanen's camp said iirc they could have negotiated but maybe the trade was a wakeup call.
Similar salaries, similar production this year, but Necas is 2 years younger.

Would rather have Rantanen myself. But I guess they also go a 2nd round pick.

Plus, there is the front-end value of this year at $6.5M. They are a cup contender and have cap space to add.

Yeah, it's interesting to look at it.
Necas + Drury + 2nd + 4th Vs. Rantanen is effectively what ended up being what Colorado got.
I agree Rantanen >> Necas, but with age and the additional assets...maybe it closes the gap a bit.
Colorado then turning around a spending like a moron on Brock Nelson makes me look back at that stretch of Avs management with some pretty big questions though.

That was my first thought too. Three years younger, so that makes a difference. But is it enough of a difference?

It was reported the Avs final offer to Rantanen was 8x11.65, it's not like they were trying to lowball or ship him out of town.

I don't mind adding Nelson as a rental with their window open but not sure about signing him until he's 37. It's not a crippling deal but they would have been better off trading for Kadri or something if they were going to re-sign him.
