Hunt is leading the Wranglers in scoring. If they want a winger to fill in temporarily on the fourth line, that's the logical choice. I get that fans want to see Kerins, but Kerins is not suited for the role that Hunt knows how to play, or vice versa.

Only because our coach would rather deploy a 4th line of low risk low upside veterans like Lomberg-Kirkland-Hunt than a 4th line that's higher risk and higher upside of something like Stromgren-Kerins-Klapka

don't have an issue with it. People want to bottom out, no? Well then, you're going to see guys like Dryden Hunt. Makes more sense to have him on the 4th line or the press box and let the young guys play big minutes in the AHL.

It's time to let the kids play. Drive the dinosaurs out and let's have some fun.

The Flames are the 10th youngest team in the NHL. They are by no means old, but I agree Kirkland probably shouldn't play.

Of their 23 man roster the Flames have 8 players 29 or older. Hunt makes number 9.

Backlund 36
Kadri 35
Hanley 34
Coleman 33
Huberdeau 32
Weegar 31
Lomberg 30
Kirkland 29
Hunt 29

What I don't like is you have a guy like Stromgren who is going to need waivers after this season, has never played an NHL game.

Why not just call him up, give him some experience around the NHL team even if it's just practice, and then maybe work him into the game if the opportunity comes up.

I know people will always argue against this but I am very adamant that at some point for a player to continue development they need at least a taste of NHL time and experience.

In order to take that next step to become an NHLer you need to learn that in the NHL. At some point your development does stall if a player doesn't get a taste of NHL action to take back and work on in the AHL.

I don't think guys like Stromgren or Kerins can learn how to be an NHLer by playing more in the AHL after already playing 120+ AHL games and 3 seasons, at some point they need more NHL leash, even if that's on a 4th line.

Guys like Gridin, Basha, Suniev, King, Morin, etc sure they need AHL time this season.

But guys like Kerins, Stromgren, Kuznetsov aren't 19/20 years old. They are 22-23 and it's time for them to be on the roster even if it means the press box every once in a while.

Every coach in the league, now or ever, prefers a 4th line of low-event plugs to a 4th line that has a little bit of offence, but less than any other team's top three lines, and will get caved if it ever has to play against anyone but the opponent's 4th line.

Honestly, if you are calling up someone to just play a few minutes, it's probably the right choice. Not the most exciting choice, but it makes sense. He does seem to bring some leadership and positive vibes when he gets called up.

The third option is letting young guys play big minutes in the NHL. That's the one we should be doing. If we're going to lose anyway, why not be riskier to let the rookies make mistakes and learn in the big leagues?
