Default Quebec Liberal Conceeds...puts support behind conservative candidate

Gilles Savard running at about 5% in the polls in the Bloc dominated riding Jonquiere-Alma conceeds and throws support to Jean-Pierre Blackburn, a former MP in the Mulroney government, who has been surging in the polls.

Liberal spokeperson confirmed that Savard conceeded but of course it's too late to remove his name from the ballot.

It's a riding that the Bloc won 55% of the vote. But wow is that ever a headline the Liberals don't need.

Also...Martin today talks how Harper will stack the Supreme Court with Conservative judges. Isn't this the same guy a couple of days ago was disgusted that Harper would suggest judges may have their own political agendas? And that the current judges having been appointed by liberals may have liberal leanings? Seems as though he just confirmed what Harper was saying.

Should also mention that the National Post not surprisingly endorsed the Tories today.

So that's both the Globe and National post giving the Tories the endorsement.

But wait!!!

Seems he didn't really "mean" that at all. According to the Lib party briantrust anyhow.

"It's certain that to-morrow I won't be the member here," said Savard. "That said, in my mind I'm sure that Mr. Blackburn should be the next member, that's how I see it."
The Liberal party then issued a news release last night it said "clarified" Savard's comments. "I do not concede victory to any of my adversaries before the actual results of the election are known," Savard was quoted as saying.
Too funny.

Funny indeed. Especially as it was during an interview on when he said it and then the liberal spokesperson confirmed it. A little late to backpeddle. The damage is done.

You know, I wouldn't be too suprised to find out that this move wasn't Paul Martin's idea.

A few days after Martin takes flack for a Liberal party supporter saying people should vote for the Bloc instead of the conservatives, and a Liberal candidate comes out and says people should vote for the conservatives instead of the Bloc?

Maybe it's a little far fetched, but why not conceed a riding where the Bloc is bound to paste the Libs and Cons so save a little face.

Is it a good thing for the Libs? Probalby not, but who knows. I'm sure they'd be willing to try a lot of different things right now.

Nice to see Bob Goodenow landed on his feet, and has a job with the Liberal's PR department...

A similar situation in Etobicoke

Rocky relations between Liberal candidate Michael Ignatieff and his riding association have culminated in the resignation of the association president.
Ron Chyczij of the Etobicoke-Lakeshore Federal Liberal Association says he can "no longer in good conscience'' support Ignatieff, who was parachuted into the west Toronto riding.
The Harvard professor's candidacy strongly divided the community.
...
"I urge voters to cast their ballot strategically in this election to ensure that Michael Ignatieff, the touted heir apparent to Paul Martin, gets a time out to reconsider his future political ambitions in this country.''
