The Elephant Man is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.

I'll never, ever understand the concept of "it's weird, so it's brilliant".
Twin Peaks and Eraserhead are two of the most r-star pieces of schlock I've ever suffered through.

I think The Straight Story is the best thing he ever did, and other than the premise, which was based on a true story and is only slightly odd, is not weird at all.
People have different tastes. If you could get past the weirdness you’d find that “schlock” is well-made and often beautiful. But if it’s not for you, it’s not for you. Nothing wrong with liking vanilla.

The classic "you don't like my thing, but it's ok you don't have any taste".

So long as it's vanilla.

I mean, you're also being dismissive by distilling works that a lot of people think were amazing and groundbreaking down to "it's weird, so it's brilliant." Why can't people enjoy it on its own merits and think it's brilliant even if you just think it's weird?
And even if you don't personally enjoy it (which is totally fine), it's basically impossible to deny the impact and influence of something like Twin Peaks. Serialized TV with film-level production quality that deals with pretty serious topics is basically the standard for dramas now, but it essentially didn't exist as a form before Twin Peaks. There's a reason why David Chase (creator of the Sopranos) said something to the effect of "anyone making 1-hour dramatic TV who says they weren't influenced by David Lynch is lying".

I never said they couldn't. I said I don't understand it. And I never denied his works are influential.
Eraserhead is the epitome of weird for the sake of weird. It's studied in film classes the world over; classes that I have taken. Even then, the whole focus was on how experimental it was, as opposed to having any redeemable qualities as a film.
I don't get it. It doesn't mean I look down on anyone who does, nor do I think any less of anyone that enjoys his filmography.
RIP David Lynch.

You don't get Elephant Man without Eraserhead, more to the point it isn't just weird for weird's sake, it is a grimly depressing film about being a poverty stricken abandoned parent, it's firmly rooted in reality for all it's strangeness
