Default Festive things for the holidays

I decided to create this thread for ideas for some fun things to do for the holidays. Personally, this year has been a bit rough and would like to incorporate some new activities that may become traditions.

What are some of your favourite holiday traditions?

As a family we cut our own tree every year and we like to chase the holiday train to Canmore. Sometimes we get to Gap lake just before the train arrives so we can watch it skim across the far side of the lake. Seeing it all lit up while reflecting off the ice looks super cool.

Good morning.

When my kids were 3,4 years old respectively I was looking for something to do in the winter with them. We ended up going to West Ed mall for the weekend, staying at a regular room in Fantasyland. We arrived on Friday and picked a restaurant to eat dinner at in the mall then found an activity (mini golf, mirror maze, etc). On Saturday we did the waterpark then did Christmas shopping and on Sunday the amusement park before driving home. My girls are now 15 and 16 and we have gone every November since that first visit (save once for covid) and it is our unofficial kickoff to Christmas. I ask them each year if they’re still interested in going and without hesitation they reply ‘absolutley’ and note this is a part of Christmas. At 15 and 16 they still look forward to a relatively simple trip that organically turned into tradition.

Another:

Sometime back either in the late 90’s or very early 2000’s I was in the drive thru at Tim Hortons around Christmas buying a coffee. As I went up to pay, the staff at the window advised the person in front of me paid for my order. I was so taken back by the simple yet kind gesture that I in turn paid for the person behind me. Every year since then on Christmas Eve morning I go to Tim Horton’s and pay for the order behind me. Its funny because I actually stopped buying coffee and started making my own coffee at home over ten years ago. Save for once a year. A single cup of coffee paid for me by a stranger has manifested into 20+ years of my doing the same and paying it forward. That person 20 years back has no idea how much they changed a part of the world with a perceived small act of kindness. And who knows if and how many others along my voyage have since contributed.

Thanks for the nice thread and Merry Christmas.

How do they know what to charge you if paying for the next person?
Is that car already there and ordered or are you somehow making an authorized payment for whoever shows up next?

Vehicle would already be there and ordered. In the lineup behind you.

When's the last time you went to a timmy drive thru?
There's an ordering station, a payment window, and a pick up window.
By the time your car is at payment, the last person already ordered because there's generally at least one car waiting between each station.
I guess unless you're there at 9:34pm maybe there's nobody else in line...

Any ideas on how to add festivity to being in the ICU unit in the cardiac ward? Waiting five months for this crap and they pick December 23rd. FACK!

Some of the others have pretty much replied on point. There is typically always a line up so by the time you reach the window someone behind you has already ordered. Or if they’re still ordering I would just explain what I’m wanting to do so just wait there until the order is complete then ring it through.

I’m also quite the early riser even on days off due to work so sometimes there’s no line at all. In that case I just enter the drive thru but stop short of the ordering wall/speaker. Once I see someone pull in I’ll pull up and order ahead of them. It’s all fairly simple.

Could you approach the charge nurse here ahead of time and ask if there’s maybe a patient with a family who will also be in ICU over Christmas and consider wrapping up some gifts for them to open from Santa anonymously? Or maybe bring in some small gifts for all the patients in the unit if it’s not too many and have the nurse hand them out. Or for a roommate on the floor if you’re sharing your room, or some variation of all the above. You mentioned cardiac ward. Nothing fixes a ticker like kindness to others.

I help out a little old ladies fraternal lodge, it's on its last legs really, only 10 members left but as a fundraiser this year I made a huge batch of bougie Cranberry Sause, with brandy, orange zest and juice, brown sugar and nutmeg then canned up 48 250ml mason jars, put on fancy labels and flogged them for 10 bucks each, made the lodge 350 bucks which the ladies are happy about

Point is people really like cute jars of bougie cranberry sauce, easy to make and a great gift

We always make time to watch some classic holiday movies. Home Alone 1 & 2, Santa Clause, Elf, Hook, etc. Seen certain holiday movies so many times, but nothing gets me in the mood like a childhood classic.

My extended family does a large family christmas party every December with cookie making, singing carols with family members playing in the family band, gift exchange, and family gossip/catch up. Since it's a yearly family event, most family members make an effort to show up so it's the perfect way to catch up on what went on during the year.

Any alternatives to turkey/ham/etc that people do for Christmas? Our family get together is a little earlier this year so thought maybe we could do something different. One year we got stuff from a shawarma that was pretty good.

Maybe really good quality Chinese food?

In the US, but we've really enjoyed the swap from Turkey to Rib Roasts. Most stores will put them on sale for $5.99/lb the week before Christmas. Usually will do that with yukon gold mashed potatoes and roasted brussel sprouts and bacon.

I guess I should be clear too, looking to get something rather than cooking ourselves, everyone is tired of cooking for holidays lol.

Thanksgiving we had Joeys special thanksgiving takeout meal and it was really good!

That's our go-to. Scoping out prices at Costco last week was certainly eye-opening.
