I don't see how you can take Kirkland out of the lineup even if Rooney is healthy.

Yeah that was a nasty snot from Kadri after the game-tying goal, I thought I had seen that on the broadcast but wasn't sure!
The Pens really took it to the Flames and it really seems like Huberdeau wants to play with Hagens next year but they got er done. fun game.

Shoot out aside, the fourth line has been clipping at 4.5% and 11% the last two games.
I don't know if Rooney fixes that (likely doesn't), but they'll make changes if they keep getting filled in like that.
Lomberg stays.
Is it Kirkland? Is it Klapka? The two of them together without Coronato?
Guessing Pelletier might get a look soon. He has the 30 day window to go up and down.

Bingo, I was surprised to see Calgary had 50% of the expected goals in all situations, after getting only 31% of the expected goals in 5v5.
But wouldn't that suggest that it was, based on the advanced stats, an evenly played game?
The eye test for me was that Pittsburgh outplayed Calgary, but the fancy stats say otherwise?

Cory Sarich played almost 1000 games in the NHL over 15 seasons.
Lets get Bahl through 1 season with the Flames first.

Clearly I meant stylistically and in terms of the role he can fill.

I tend to lean on 5 on 5 stats when determining who the better team was, and it was Pittsburgh by a landslide.
Calgary picked up a lot of expected goal action on that early first period powerplay and then again with the goalie pulled.
The middle 50 minutes they were bad five on five and with the man advantage.
Their first period powerlay generated 1.18 in expected goals, of their 3.26 for the entire 65 minute game.

Dude ... it was a comparison.
Comparisons are always made of a younger player and what he looks like and what he could become.
By your standards you can't make a comparison until when? Game 250? 500?

I kind of see him as a Tanev light. Sarich was much more physical with the open ice contact where as Balk seems to just be lock down steady and willing to battle through whatever he needs to.
That trade is trending towards being a potential coup by Conroy if he evolves into a mainstay in the top 4.

You ever watch the draft?
They talk about every player drafted in terms of comparables and most of them won’t even see the league for years at best

Not great, for sure.
But after seeing the 11% last game, I also noticed that XGF/60 was something like 0.1 and XGA/60 was 0.4 so it was really low event hockey, which isn't the worst thing for a 4th line.

I think Sarich is a better comparison than Tanev - Bahl doesn't have the thunderous open-ice hits is hit repertoire (yet), but defensively, he is pretty similar, and he does use his size well in the corners and in front of the net.
Regardless, I think Bahl continues to look better each game (remember, he missed most of camp), and looks pretty calm and controlled for a 24 year old. For comparison, the D+7 season was Kylington's first full NHL season, and was Andersson's break-out season. Defensemen typically just start to get it around the D+7 year.
TL/DR: Bahl could turn out to be a beauty!

I'm not comparing him to Robyn Regehr, but that's another guy that was very physical but didn't lay out big open ice hits. The reality is that open ice hits are pretty rare now.
Another guy that occurred to me was Bobby Boughner. Or to go back further, Ric Nattress.

Klapka was instrumental on Andersson's goal where he lifted the defender's stick but he has looked behind the play and not contributing much. OTOH, that could be said about most of the skaters out there last night. He could be the one to sit out for Pelletier to come in or we see Rooney or Kirkland on the wing.

I seem to recall a draft report on Bahl where he was compared to Regehr.

interestingly, at least early in the game (lots changed as the game went on including some benchings and shuffling) the Flames seemed to be actively putting the Kirkland line out against the Crosby line- at first I thought maybe it was just bad luck on some icings, but no there were a few occasions where it was their choice and they went with it. For sure they wanted Andersson/Bahl as the main matchup but was surprised to see the 4th line get the call- that also didn't go well per the fancy stats and the eye test but then Crosby can do that to you

I don't hate Andersson, but after watching the Kings last night, I wonder if he might be a fit there. They are desperate for a defenseman who can provide solid minutes. Conroy might be able to sell high + the in-division tax.
