Default Goalie tandem rankings

https://www.espn.com/nhl/insider/sto...s-stars-bruins

Flames ranked 29th according to Greg. I think Vladar is healthier now and Wolf is looking great. Wonder how things will look at the end of the year!

was ready to be super upset but not too far off (maybe could 1 or 2 spots higher) at this point...definitely feel this ranking will be much higher by year's end.

What a weird ranking from top to bottom.

Leafs ranking is way to high

How are they ahead of the Sens who have a Vezina winner?

It's ESPN, who cares? They still don't know anything about hockey.

The Colorado write up seems bang on.

Seems pretty fair for the most parts although there's a few teams that could move up or down a few slots. Flames ranking is fair as Vladar was terrible last season and Wolf still an unknown.

No problem with where they have the Flames, because both guys are question marks going into the season.

Lots of bizarre rankings though, and one of the biggest for me, was NJD at 3. Top 10? Sure. Third?

Adds more motivation for both goalies!
Hoping both goalies and the team will make the “analysts” eat their pubes at the end of the season!

More bulletin board material for Conroy, might as well #### on the goaltending too.

Because... Leafs.

Everything there is overrated, as is with Edmonton.

From the article:

Quote:
And keep in mind that these rankings are a combination of past performance and projections for the 2024-25 season.
In other words, current performance isn't even factored in. And the projections could be anything, from complex and hairy statistical analysis all the way to two ESPN staffers pulling guesses out of each other's complex and hairy arses.

Yeah, not putting much stock in this.

For sure. I do find it amusing, though, that this article was published today. It would not seem so funny had it been published two weeks ago.

Pretty much the team motto this season

Well if you read the article they clearl explain how the rankings are derived.

Quote:
These rankings were formulated through discussions with a variety of goalie experts -- coaches, analytics gurus, former players -- as well as through stats from sites like Evolving Hockey, Money Puck, Hockey Reference and Stathletes.
So no, not two ESPN staffers pulling guesses out of their rear ends.

I don't have an issue with the Flames' ranking. As the writeup says, Vladar/Wolf have a high ceiling but given the lack of track record it's very hard to tell how they'll perform.

I'm more than happy with us being the underdogs/underwolves in any category at this point...

I think it is more likely ESPN staffers pulling guesses out of their rear ends

Clearly? They say they consulted with analysts and looked at data sources, then quote Kevin Woodley’s hit on Fan960, also have some generic quotes from unnamed analysts

Markstrom has been pretty average, I’m sure that last year they wouldn’t have had the Flames anywhere near the top 5. But it was a big splash that fit the narrative that goaltending killed NJ last year and it’s fixed now

Many a fan sitting in their basement could have looked up the goalies on each NHL roster and put out a similar quality article

Now if Steve Valiquette wants to put out a goalie tandem ranking, I’m listening
