Default Weakest NHL Offense Ever

It’s early. But the Flames are trending towards 133 goals. Previous worst was 150 goals via the 2013/14 Buffalo Sabres.

It’s quite incredible to watch. I just haven’t figured out if it’s completely due to skill level or coaching. I think it’s a combination of the two.

Our offensive strategy is so neutered now. There’s zero imagination or flexibility. Same thing everytime. Gain zone entry. Rim around to the point. Fire puck into the pile. Flail around at rebound if there is one. Repeat.

The powerplay is deflating to watch. I think they would be better off declining powerplays at this point. They just kill momentum.

Reason I think it has an equal amount to do with coaching is there are a number of high scoring players (in the past) in the lineup that have zero or close to zero points in 8 games. You don’t completely forget how to generate offense overnight.

I get we don’t have many snipers. But we’re averaging less than 2 goals a game. Which is almost impossible. Especially at this level. You watch some of the more offensive players in the offensive zone (like coronato). Guy should be shooting everytime he gets possession. But you can see he gets sucked into the rim it back to the point strategy.

Anyway. I’m at a loss to explain it. They struggled scoring last season but this is another level. I’ve never seen anything like it over an extended period of time. It’s almost impossible what they are doing. They might be the worst scoring team ever. Just wondering what others think.

I might as well say it again. The Flames offense is awful because they don't have a player who can carry to puck through the neutral zone. Their zone entries are flaccid and their breakouts are like tossing a puck into a blender. Until a puck carrier comes around no strategy or line combination will make a difference.

The reason Kadri can’t play like McDavid is not because the coach told him not to.

I think its a low confidence issue more than skill or coaching. Things started rough and they've let it grow and now it plagues them game to game.

Huska's system/style is also likely making it harder to pull out of ths offensive rut. But he isnt the cause.

We have 25, 30 and 35 goal scorers on this team from just last season.

They're more inept than most teams, sure. But they aren't this inept.

It’s not even frustrating to watch anymore. It’s more fascinating.

I hope to get there. This is the earliest I can remember feeling checked out on this team.

I’m not checked out though. I tune in to see how they don’t win trying to figure out how they did it.

I’ve honestly never seen a team that can be the better team for most of each game they are in but lose every single one. With a lights out goalie.

It’s really almost impossible what they are doing.

Juggling lines every game. Super basic offense strategy. Anemic powerplay. Lots of variables.

I just don't understand how frost can look like a star in the exhibitions then take such a sharp right turn as soon as the games start to matter.

I get theres a difference in intensity, but is it that stark that you cant carry any of that production over?

I think he is just inconsistent. For some stretches he will look like a legit 2nd line center in the NHL. And for some stretches he will look like he should be scratched.

I don't know if it's a confidence thing or what.

I have seen the Calgary Flames score 13 goals in 8 games before. I've seen lots of other teams score 13 goals in 8 games. They just didn't happen to be the first 8 games of the season.

In absolutely none of those cases did they continue to score at that pace for an entire season.

This is a case study in freaking out over small sample sizes.
