Default NHL.com: Top 20 Wingers

No Flames to post from this list, so here's the next best thing?

(much to everyone's chagrin, I'm sure)

Quote:
2. Matthew Tkachuk, Florida Panthers

In his first season with the Panthers, Tkachuk tied for sixth in the NHL with 109 points (40 goals, 69 assists) in 79 games and was third in voting for the Hart Trophy as NHL most valuable player. He was even better in the playoffs, setting Panthers records for goals (11), assists (13) and points (24) in 20 games to help Florida reach the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1996. The 25-year-old scored four game-winning goals in the postseason, including the series-clinching goal in the final seconds of the third period of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Carolina Hurricanes.

"He is the total package on the wing," Hradek said. "He gets into the battle when things are not going the way for the Florida Panthers, he bangs into somebody, gets under the skin of the goaltender, gets under the skin of the defenseman. ... He went to a new team this year and just picked up right where he left off in Calgary the year before."

Weegar's probably our only hope for another Flames appearance on one of these lists.

I know, I know... "who cares about lists?" The funny thing about lists like these is that they're usually pretty indicative of what you can look forward to. Especially on a Flames team with literally no surprises up our sleeves (at least not of this kind of ilk, anyway).

Patrick Kane was too washed up to be on these lists five years ago. Definition of empty calories.

RNH ahead of Gaudreau and Keller is hysterical.

Lol no Huberdeau on the list? One down year writes off the fact that he set an NHL record for assists the prior year. Not to mention a few of those guys are well known for being Centers.

Absolutely not. He's just fine in Toronto.

I get a kick out of this part...

Quote:
Guentzel...

The 28-year-old has scored at least 36 goals three times in the past five seasons, one of seven NHL players to accomplish that (Sebastian Aho of the Carolina Hurricanes, Leon Draisaitl, Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, Alex Ovechkin, David Pastrnak).
Previous generation of players: "Iginla becomes the 10th player in NHL history to score at least 30 goals in 11 consecutive seasons!"

This generation of players: "Guentzel is one of only 7 NHL players to score at least 36 goals 3 times in the last 5 seasons!"

Yeah thats rough.

Hockey guy did some for top 40 forwards, top 30 D and top 10 goalies.
Not one flame..

I know he's just some YouTube put he has a pretty big following and is usually pretty rational.

Pretty disappointing state... not one truly elite player. Hopefully Huberdeau has a huge bounce back.

Meh.. meaningless article during the dog days of summer. Should come as no surprise that 13/20 players are representing teams from the Eastern Conference.

Flames historically play better when they are cast as underdogs heading into the season anyway. RNH as a top-15 winger in the league though..? lol the off-season champs do it again, impressive.

Huberdeau will make a resurgence.

Top 20 type of resurgence? Maybe not. Top 30? I could see that

I mean I could easily make an argument for Mackenzie Weegar being a top 15 defensemen in the NHL over the past three years. Who cares if he doesn't get the respect he deserves - his impact remains the same.

These lists are silly.

RNH being a top 15 winger in the game? Now that's a laugh.

I'm not overly excited about RNH being on the list either, but it's not like EDM plays him as a C anymore. On paper, you might think of them as McDavid, Drasaitl and RNH 1-2-3 down the middle, but in reality it's McDavid and Drasaitl, 1 and 2, with RNH bouncing on either of their wings. At least for part of the game anyway, then it's just all three of them together on a single line for the rest of it.

Weird write up on Kyle Connor

Quote:
Connor had an NHL-best 49 assists last season while scoring at least 30 goals for the fifth time in the past six seasons.

His 49 were the best 49? Because they weren’t the most

Not much argument from me if you are putting the most weight on last year.

Weegar, Huberdeau, and Lindholm all can get on these lists but they have to play better than last year. Weegar the last half of the year was a top 20 D though.

TBF in one of these seasons, the league only played 56 games, otherwise Ovechkin would have a 30 goal streak of his entire career

Interesting parameters they're working with.

And oddly specific, like they're being drawn out of a hat.

They must mean his best number ever since he made the NHL because there's no other explanation. Except that doesn't even make sense because it's a bigger number than he had in junior or the minors as well.

I think they mean, out of players who have scored 30 goals in five of the past 6 seasons, none of the other players had as many assists in a season as well.

I am not going to fact check that because it sounds like more trouble than it is worth. No matter what they mean, it's a weird stat to pull out. I am fine with Connor being ranked where he is and I don't think they need to go down rabbit holes to justify it.

If anything Connor is ranked too low. For me he is top 10. Would definitely have Huberdeau over Kane. Svechnikov also. Possibly Jesper Bratt.
