Struggling to stay in playoff picture, Flames can't afford to take Red Wings lightly


For a Flames team that needs to be picking up as many points as possible, Thursday night would seem — on paper — like a good place to kick things off.

They played a tough, solid game against the New York Rangers on Monday night but wound up with only one point after losing in overtime.

Leaving Detroit with anything less than two points, though, would surely be a disappointment.

Flames, Red Wings both looking to gain traction

Calgary has been spinning its wheels since a three-game winning streak in early December. The Flames have gone 11-7-7 since that modest streak, unable to string together more than two consecutive victories.

They did emerge from New York with a sense of unity. They didn't back down from some rugged hits doled out by the Rangers. There were eight fighting or roughing penalties handed out in the first two periods.

Detroit hosts Calgary in a non-conference matchup

TOP PERFORMERS: Dylan Larkin has 15 goals and 28 assists for the Red Wings. Lucas Raymond has scored four goals with three assists over the last 10 games.

Tyler Toffoli has scored 19 goals with 24 assists for the Flames. Andrew Mangiapane has four goals and seven assists over the last 10 games.

That's why it's a bit scary. None of Detroit, Ottawa, or especially Buffalo can be taken lately - something the Flames have had a propensity of doing this year.

The Flames are so inconsistent. It will be a coin toss depending on who scores first. Not a slam dunk for sure.

I don't understand how the Flames % chance of making playoffs is near 90% if they win, and 83% if they lose...unless I'm not understanding those stats correctly?

I'm sure it takes remaining strength of schedule in consideration, but I currently see the Flames chances of making post-season as unlikely...

They've now had some time to practice with the new PP units; I'd like to see some better movement as the PP has been stale and stagnant all year (which has nothing to do with Sutter's system and everything to do with Muller IMO).
