My favorite player in this deal is Martin Kaut. He's a first-rounder, has size (6'2") and can play a hard-nosed style. He never gets quality minutes when he's up with the Avs, and he's a bit buried in that organization, but he could develop into a quality middle-six player IMO (more likely suited for the third line). I never liked Merkley-he's one of those one-dimensional, fly-by-night defensemen that never last in the NHL.

This deal could end up being sneaky good for the Avs.

Nieto will slot nicely into the bottom 6 and help the PK.

If they can unlock Merkley's draft potential, it's found money.

Looks like the games are beginning. Guessing Tre will throw an iron in the fire.

Always interesting to see how it plays out. I think they need a trigger man for Huberdeau and a depth defenceman.

I do wonder if Avs organization is the optimal spot for a Merkley revival with Makar and Toews to look up to (though, I guess he did have EK65 right in San Jose, so yah, maybe a lost cause!)

Nieto appears to oscillate between the 2 franchises every 3.5 years?
