Stutzle meets the eye test for me. Should be one of the top scorers in the league during this contract.

For those of you wondering, Brady Tkachuk makes 8.2

I like Stutzle but his career high is 59 points in 79 games.

He needs to be over or around a PPG consistently for this to be worth it.

Hopefully the big deals to Norris and Stutzle pay off for the Sens but it's a bit risky for guys that haven't really shown that they are truly top end players yet.

Do love that the Melnyk sisters don't seem to have any issues giving the Senators a strong budget though. Cool to see and I'm a bit jealous and wish I was able to run a hockey team in my early 20s.

Sens are all in on their young core. Norris, Stutzle, Tkachuk, Chabot all getting near or max term deals for ~$8M per. Could work out for them if these guys really take a continued step forward and the cap increases.

Yep, I bet it works out quite nicely. And for a team like the Sens this is basically necessary if they believe in their young guys and want to be a serious hockey team.

They can't do short show me deals because most young stars will be looking to leave as soon as they can if the Sens give them shorter contracts to prove their worth, unfortunately.

I wonder if the Flames will ever give out a max-term 2nd contract like this? Monahan's was close, i guess

There's some risk to it, but I can't hate what Ottawa is doing. Big money second contracts to

Tkachuk (age 22)
Norris (23)
Batherson (24)
Stutzle (20)
Chabot (25)

All of them signed to their late 20's or beyond. No one over $10M a year. If they project as planned, Ottawa has an amazing core for a long time. And, if the cap rises as projected, lots of flexibility down the line. If Calgary set themselves up with a group like that, I'd be very happy, so gotta give credit where credit is due.

Brady negotiated captaincy first, so Stutzle got himself an extra $150k/year more than Brady.

Was just listening to the Stutzle interview on 32 thoughts yesterday where they brought up a long term contract possibility.

Some of these high value contract based on potential are going to come back to hurt some teams. I don’t think this one is going to be one of them. With all these contracts being signed, I wonder what Jason Robertson ends up getting.

$8 million is the new $6 million. Teams have always been giving young stars long-term deals based on potential ... the only thing that's new is the dollar figure.

As long as they’re a tier or two above guys like Wennberg or C White then it’s a reasonable gamble. Worst case you have a slightly overpaid 2C, which is still very important and can be tough to find

I agree 100%. It makes a lot of sense to me for small market teams in Canada or the US who are not the most desirable destinations league wide to max the term out of the second contract in order to maximize the window to win. There is a risk for both sides however.

I personally was not pleased when Gaudreau signed because I really wanted the 8 years of term for the exact reason of what happened. He became one of the best players in the league and left as soon as he could get to UFA. Monahan on the flip side was someone I also wanted them to go 8 years with and the team needed to include a 1st after 6 years of his deal to dump the last year of his contract for cap space.

Toronto is 2 years away from making Matthews the highest paid player if he even wants to stay. The contract will likely age better at 27-35 than it would 29-37 but he is going to cost several million more per season if they can keep him.

This deal makes sense for Ottawa for sure. I am a little surprised he got a higher cap hit than Tkachuk however

I wonder if the new contract includes acting lessons.

What was the old Oiler standard...6x6?

I'm not sure if too many guys on these long term deals will succeed. Players can get comfortable, and not raise their ceilings. Maybe it works...of all these guys Stutzle might be the most talented.

Gallagher sounds like a dimebag edmontonian here. Shouldn't be surprising but damn am I glad we never traded for this chode as was suggested countless times.
