Default Travis Jost (TSN) on Upset Likeliness

Numbers are so tight I don't honestly think they show much.

But for what it's worth he has the Flames as the 3rd least likely team to be upset, the Oilers the 2nd most likely ahead of only the Kings (that could still have home ice)

Course the second last team lands the last team.

Hopefully all the disrespect towards LA motivates them that much more.

Calgary is tied for second at 67% or is that rounding?

seems like a really weird way to do this. This assumes that all 12 of the above categories are of equal weighting when for the most part they are apples and oranges

Yeah I hope the Kings bury the Oilers. Woodcroft's lack of head coaching NHL playoff experience likely plays a part in that series as well. Against his former bench boss no less.

interesting- not sure I fully understand the table- shows for example only NYR above average for Save percentage- not sure if that's because Shesterkin is so incredibly awesome that Rangers are only team above average, or does this mean that the other playoff teams that won't have home ice (Preds, Pens, Bruins etc) are the other teams above average in this category

either way his 'modeling' comes down pretty favourable on the NYR, a team that if I understand the prevailing narrative, is mostly smoke and mirrors other than the goalie. looks like maybe they are good goalie and good PP

Well that series isn't an upset either way

Any statistic that shows E=NG works for me.

There are plenty to go around.

For example: Sort all goalies by save percentage and Smith is 32nd. And this includes goalies from non-playoff teams (!)

Just a couple of days ago, XKCD did a comic on exactly this kind of ‘analysis’:

In this case: ‘I have pulled 12 vaguely important-sounding criteria out of my arse, given them simplistic yes/no values, and then weighted all 12 equally. If I count them up, then it becomes data, and I can do math on it! …that is, I could if I knew math.’
