Fair signing for a solid player.
and now for the Flames slant...
You know who is better than Joel Farabee? Andrew Mangiapane.
Farabee is signed at $5M while being 4 years younger? Andrew Mangiapane, assuming he has another strong season, will be a $6M player at minimum, and he'll be worth it.

I’m not saying Mangiapane isn’t better but Farabee is a top prospect who put up 55 point pace at 21 years old. Cost has lots to do with potential and I doubt this contract pushes mangiapane to $6 mil per year unless he has a big year this year

Fletcher got a lot of work done this summer. Made some big and risky trades to revamp an area of need, traded a long time core member in a one for one shakeup deal, re-signed their most important pending UFA to a max contract and just signed their top young forward to a long term deal.
I don’t love everything Fletcher has done but I don’t hate it and I respect that he remained committed to change. We heard at the deadline the Flyer and Flames did the most pre work for the summer and here you have Calgary losing their captain and using the cap space to sign a 30 year old middle 6 left shot forward to a 6 year deal.
I am sorry I know there is still time but this has been an unbelievably brutal offseason so far. I really hope the Flames can pull off the Eichel deal or at least get involved in the dominos that could follow but if this is the team they start the season with I am not happy

I'd be ok with Mangiapane getting an identical deal.

But
Where's the Flyers logo and the [Signing] prefix?

I think this is a borderline steal for the Flyers

The term makes the contract a potential steal. Interestingly enough, or maybe not, but Farabee is part of the Quebec/Philly Lindros trade tree. That trade is like the Energizer Bunny.

I'll preface this by saying I really haven't watched him play, and he looks like a good young player, but remember when RFA used to mean something?
This buys 1 year of UFA?
It will probably end up a good contract but the guy has played just over 100 games and is still on his ELC.

not starting an argument (or defending Tre) but until we see the positive results, then how can we properly judge these moves?

I agree and a lot of these teams that have made trades and re-signed or sign players to long term extensions might look good on paper now but are very short on draft picks from the past draft and the next couple drafts and have cap hell coming very soon.
Philly has $15 mil cap space next summer but has Giroux and Risto to re-sign. They could easily get close to $15 mil for just the 2 of them and that puts them at 14 players. So sure it is exciting when your GM makes big move after big move but the biggest players so far this summer all seem to be forgetting about this flat cap situation for around the next 5 years! That's a long time to be an average team in cap hell with no chance of getting relief.
My first choice for the Flames is rebuild/retool. 2nd choice is go for Eichel. But it is seems to be very exaggerated around here that if neither happen that there is 0 chance this team can get better and will always be stuck in the middle. Lots of teams be patient in the middle and figure it out by drafting well and resigning players to good deals. At least Treliving hasn't done anything that is cap crippling for the next 5 years and IMO this teams prospect pool is trending in the right direction.

I think the stagnant cap has just accelerated the way this was already trending. It's becoming much more of a young man's league, players are more able and expected to contribute significantly earlier in their career, and teams are more willing to pay big money to have guys locked up until they're 28 or 29. There will still be stars that get huge money hitting UFA for the first time but the second contract may well become the big one for more and more players.
It used to be that guys were getting paid based on what they'd done previously, now they're getting paid on what it's expected they'll do. It's a bit of a gamble but honestly it actually makes more sense to me.

This is one of the reasons the Flyers are my second fave/Eastern Conference team. Seemingly no matter who the GM is (except maybe Hextall) they take big swings to try and be a top team. It doesn't always work out, and sometimes spectacularly fails (see: Bryzgalov, Ilya), but it's never boring haha

Wow I just took a look at their Cap Friendly for next season and it is bleak. They only have 8 forwards, 3 defenseman, and 1 goalie signed with only 15.5 million in cap space.
RFA
Allison
Aube-Kubel
Frost
Morin
UFA
Brassard
Braun
Giroux
Jones
Ristolainen
Thompson
Yandle
What are reasonable deals for Giroux and Ristolainen? 8 and 5? That’s less than they both make now.
Leaves them with only 2.5 million in space to ice 4 forwards, 3 d men, and a back up goalie.

Farabee - Hayes - Konecny
van Riemsdyk - Couturier - Atkinson
Lindblom - Laughton
With Frost, Allison, and Aube-Kubel likely signing very reasonable deals. It's not like they have massive holes, and I'd expect Giroux to take a decent hit cap-wise as he'll be 34. They also have Foerster probably pushing into the line-up in 22/23, and Cam York stepping into the NHL.
Provorov - Ellis
Sanheim
They have their top-3 defencemen locked in, and their #1 goalie.
I don't think they are in a bad spot cap-wise.

If Giroux takes a discount it will be a long term deal that expires when he is close to 40. I look at Ovechkin too and thought he would give a discount and he certainly did not do that. High escrow payments might lead to a lessor of a discount as well.
I love how CP just feels that anything the Flames do is stupid though unless it's land Eichel or blowing it up. We wish we were the Flyers because they make smart moves and pick a direction.
We trade a 3rd for Zadorov and sign him for 1 year - terrible asset management but good contract for the year
Philly trades a 1st and 2nd for Risto who has 1 year left on a deal - wish we had their GM
Flames sign Coleman at age 29 to a deal that expires at 35. Risky move he will suck on the back end of that deal and fall apart at age 32
Philly trades a young up and coming dman in Myers for Ellis who has had injury concerns and is signed until he's 37. Good move Ellis is unreal!
Philly resign Couturier who has had some injuries as well until he is 37 @ almost $8mil per year. He's a very good player and underrated but that is a risky deal just as much as the Coleman deal.
Flames have guys like Tanev and Markstrom who are 31 and they are labeled players we can't have as a middle of the pack team and they are too old and we need to move on from them or just stay away from signing guys like this from now on.
Philly has 9 guys over the age of 30 and the Flames have 5 but we are always plugging holes on our roster with old guys blocking our young guys from getting a chance to play and this needs to stop but we also need to be like Philly who has double the old guys signed til they are nearly 40 and a few others that are old and blocking more youth from being on this team.
We trade 3rds and 4ths to stay in the middle but Philly trades 1st and 2nds and that is better? Philly is a mess IMO and I'm glad we haven't done any of their moves this off season.

Yeah, really, there's a lot to like about the Flyers (for now) as long as Hart doesn't have a stinker of a year. Yes, their long term contract outlook is definitely iffy.

Sorry but Mnagiapanne isn't better than Farabee.
