Default Athletic Power Rankings Flames in at 21st

If I am "stealing" to much content I hope a moderator shuts this down

The Athletic current power ranking has the Flames at 21st.

Toronto 4
Winnipeg 7
Edmonton 9
Seattle 16
Montreal 23
Vancouver 24
Ottawa 27

don’t think they were as bad as they looked last year and the blake coleman signing should help their forwards.
but that’s a huge giordano-sized hole on their blue line

Sean 2:31 PM
yep. we’ve said it a couple times, but that division sucks, so i expect them to be relevant. also desperately trying to manifest “jack eichel to calgary.” they’re clearly trying to win now, damn the torpedos, so why not sell all the way out? make it happen, brad treliving.

Dom 2:32 PM
i feel like they’re better off rebuilding, but if they’re not… sell the farm for eichel. why not

Sean 2:33 PM
oh, they absolutely would be better off rebuilding, but rebuilding teams don’t sign Blake Coleman to 25-year-deals. just do it, it’ll be entertaining for the rest of us.

These two statements are not mutually exclusive. I think the Flames are at or around the 21st best team in the league and will likely finish top 16.

That's the nature of an "own-division" biased schedule.

That's basically what I'm saying, and what the article acknowledges as well.

Lol at Oilers 9th and Toronto 4th, even Winnipeg 7th and Seattle 16th

But Flames 21st is about right. Just around the lottery is the normal position

Yeah I don't agree with this ranking. Full season of Sutter will sort out this sorry bunch and turn them into winners.

If those were Vegas odds, I'd bet we finish higher than every team on that list.

Oilers 9th with that defence is pretty funny... better hope for another very good year for Mike Smith.

In the Pacific

Vegas 3
Edmonton 9
Seattle 16
Flames 21
LA 22
Canucks 24
SJ 29
Ducks 31

So they have it as a 4 team race to 3rd to end up playing Edmonton in round 1

Could be worse.

Who produced this? 'The Athletic' isn't specific enough.

Winnipeg at 7, Edmonton at 9, and Montreal at 23 are all laughable. Off the top of my head, teams that are clearly better than WPG and EDM:

TBL
FLA
CAR
WAS
BOS
PIT
NYI
COL
VEG
TOR

that's 10 without trying.

In my opinion, WPG, EDM, MTL and CGY are all in the pack of middle teams, below those 10, above the bottom 8 or 10.

I love that their discussion is the exact same train of thought that we’ve gone through here.

- we SHOULD be rebuilding
- but we aren’t rebuilding
- whelp, if we’re doing something dumb to begin with, may as well go BIG. All in on Jack Eichel!

Exactly.

Like it was written by a bunch of emotional fans and not by paid "professionals'' who should have some objectivity to their conclusions.

It's clearly stated in the article that ranking the Jets there was a joke to troll Dom, who said it worked and he spat out his water.

Wonder who they were trolling when they put the Oilers at 9?

With the current lineup, I would think they are around a 18th to 21st place team

Flames have serious lineup issues which as of yet were not addressed

Defensive are missing top 4 dman,

Forwards will struggle to score...

Will they over or under achieve.
