Not surprised at the term, but the AAV is a little surprising. Great player, but I'm not convinced he's worth that. Is he a franchise defenseman?

Yep. Future Norris winner, maybe multiple times imo. Such a good all around d-man.

Great term, will be a steal of a deal for Dallas down the road.

From this and the rumours on what some ufa’s want ,I guess teams are thinking that after flat cap is lifted that there will be a big bump in cap. That said he is going to be a very good #1 dman.

Good contract. Locking in a top-tier defenceman for all of his prime years, just like Chabot in Ottawa.

I hope Valimaki gets to a place where he becomes worth one of these long-term investments.

I would be okay with the Flames signing either or both of Tkachuk or Gaudreau to the very same deal. This is the most I would want to pay Johnny (8.5) but I would be willing to go a little higher on Tkachuk.

At first glance it seems like a high AAV, but I wish Treliving would've had the guts to sign the elite young RFAs to 8 year deals like this (or I wish the players themselves were willing to sign deals like this).

Heiskanen was so dominant in that series against the Flames a few seasons ago. Dallas has a gem of a player there.

But wait… I thought the Flames never had any elite young RFAs, because according to you, virtually all their players are junk?

Great young player, love to have him on the Flames.
That being said the RFA model is completely shot now, mainly thanks to the idiots in EDM and TOR.

The RFA model where players were underpaid for their best years, and then got big UFA contracts based on their past performance when they were already in decline? Yeah, that model deserved to be shot.

Neither Johnny or Tkachuk wanted to sign longer term contracts.

Tkachuk was willing to hold out to ensure he got UFA as soon as possible.

Johnny caved a bit and they settled on 6 years.
