Default App for deleting similar photos en masse?

I've been roped into helping a relative clean the media off their iPhone. They don't want to buy increased cloud space, which is what I recommended.

Anybody have experience with a slick tool to do the job of deleting similar photos? I only know of ways to remove duplicates.

Like I don't have my own 19,437 photos to deal with. Sheesh.

Oh, I know it. There’s something wrong with me psychologically--I’m a people pleaser. I imagine they’ve been shot down by their own kids, so I feel like the last resort. Hopefully I can just install the app, let it do the job, and get the hell out of there.

Export them onto a portable hard drive and delete then them off the phone.

Easy.

I was going to do this but then I realized I could get 50GB from iCloud for less than the cost of half a Coke Zero so I came to my senses and just did it.

But yeah they should also offload them to external storage if they aren't going to have them all backed up to the cloud.. otherwise you risk losing photos.

As for a tool to delete similar photos, not sure how that would work, even with some kind of AI. Seems like human level judgment to keep the one where one person doesn't look awkard or they want the bird that flew through the shot rather than the one without the bird etc.

Assuming the phone is a newer model (not lightning cable), get a USB-C external drive

https://www.amazon.ca/SanDisk-Ultra-...s%2C211&sr=8-4
These have been a revelation for me.

It plugs directly into the phone. No app needed, just mount for file transfer. Then you can simply just go into your file manager (whatever the iPhone equivalent of that is–I cant remember), select the photos, then there should be a move command. Select the USB, and 'move here'. Just like on the computer.

Or you can copy and paste the files to the drive and then delete the originals.

Put the drive on a keychain so it isnt lost since these ones are quite small.

Don't tell them about an app. I think it costs money, so I assume they'll refuse to pay that too. If it deletes the wrong thing, you gave a bad referral and you're to blame.

Tread carefully. It's not the initial effort that always annoys me, it's the refusal of responsibility and then a blame game that someone else screwed up, not them. Delete the wrong thing that's not recoverable and they'll blame you.

Tell them what they're asking is not possible without the risk of losing photos. It's stupid you have to do things like this, but basically, you have to notify them of the risks, have them say they give consent and are aware/accept the risks. Otherwise, family gatherings get weird.

If they consent to something as simple as installing an app to clean up, cool. Clearing out to a drive works, but be careful about the use of the word clearing out vs backing up. On a drive, you risk losing redundancy on both phone and iCloud if new media won't have space to back up on iCloud, so media lost if phone is lost/failure. Or so some media could be lost later on if the drive fails and it's no longer on the phone or iCloud.

I and family members have lost media in this manner when transitioning the files. It's not worth saving the extra few hundred bucks at all and/or any form of momentary risk of losing it if the media is potentially priceless.

Yeah, I talked them into upgrading their iCloud. It was an easy sell cause I discovered they were also paying for Google One and didn't even know it.

Also ordered a mini usb thumbdrive for myself. It's pretty slick for pulling files off my device, but I haven't found a way to quickly sort through the keepers and throwaways on my cloud. I suppose there's little incentive for Google or Apple to make this easy.

Thanks!
