All Team First Line

Inspired by Bingo's daily jersey vote and looooob's posts in those threads.

What would be the Flames all time starting line?

For the sake of the exercise forwards need to be in their correct position to keep things interesting. For example Backlund can't be put as a winger (Ward!), or Gaudreau as a center. I think for D men handedness shouldn't matter ( Gulutzan!).

It is hard to pick only 6 players but I would go with

Johnny Gaudreau-Joe Nieuwendyk- Jarome Iginla

Mark Giordano - Al MacInnis

Miikka Kiprusoff


The hardest choice was left wing. I went with Johnny Hockey simply because when he is on he is nearly unstoppable and has the puck on a string. Watching him feed MacInnis and Iginla would be an absolute treat.

Also, I went with Gio over Suter because I think captaincy matters, and having three former captains on the all time first line just feels right.

Giordano. Norris.
MacInnis. Conn Smythe.
Kiprusoff. Vezina.

Where it becomes questionable is with the centre and left wing. Do you go by tenure or highest peak? And who fits those respective bills?

End of the day:

Roberts - Nieuwendyk - Iginla
Giordano - MacInnis
Kiprusoff

The interesting one would be the second team.

Gaudreau - Gilmour - Fleury
Suter - Regehr
Vernon

First line is too obvious. Very little room for debate on LW or LD IMO. Monahan vs. Nieuwendyk (maybe Gilmour if longevity doesn't matter) and Kipper vs. Vernon are worthy of some discussion, but it's been done lots.

I think it's more fun to build the whole roster (my only rule was to avoid generational overlap on lines...obviously it's not the 'best' team, just fun lines ):

Nilsson-Nieuwendyk-Iginla = The Legacy Line
Gaudreau-Cammalleri-Fleury = Mighty Mice
Makarov-Monahan-McDonald = 3M v3.0
Roberts-Otto-Tkachuk = insert creative line name here...they would just be a PITA to play against

Regher plays on the left side - needs offensive D-man on the right side. I debated about that, but if Regehr does the pounding on the left side where you see him most and have a right D handle things up ice. Suter, for most parts, didn't show up for the playoffs anyway when the Flames made it deep in the playoffs. He's usually hurt. I'd definitely have him as a second/3rd team on the left defensive positon besides Regehr on the right side.

However, with Regehr as the second team and he's you shutdown d-man, you can go with a total Shutdown D-line by adding Macoun/Murzyn/Nattress/McCrimmon or maybe even Rhett Warrener.

you are down grading Suter for his his 49 playoff games 39 pts over 8 seasons as a Flame?
