TOR, more or less, has an agreement in place with Kasperi Kapanen on an extension. Not expected to be formalized until TOR cap (Marner) situation clarified. It will be a 3 year deal with an AAV in the $3.2M to $3.4M range.

if i understand it correctly, at this salary, the compensation would only be a 2nd round pick... Kapanen is easily worth that imo...

of course kapanen would also have to want to sign the offer sheet...

Don't think there's a lot of motivation from Bennett to include a 4th year on that deal seeing as it would be a year of UFA. Bennett has 3 years of RFA left. I'd like to see a 2 year, 2.75M AAV for Bennett.

No particular reason for him to sign a 3-year contract at those dollars. he may as well bet that he'll improve. Even if he doesn't, he'll likely get at least that anyway.

Only reason not to is insurance against is injuries.

Johnsson and Kapanen are both better players than Bennett, so if this is the bar we’re probably looking at around $2.5 million.

Kapanen and Johnsson got much more opportunistic minutes due to how Toronto's depth worked out. If Bennett were in a similar spot, I think you'd see some similar numbers being posted.

For Bennett's new deal, I imagine Sam will want to keep it as short as possible. 2 years, 2.5-2.75M AAV makes a lot of sense. With Frolik moving on, and Treliving talking about slotting players better - I think we'll see Bennett with more opportunistic minutes, and higher numbers.
