Default Blashill extended in Detroit

Which likely means Ken Holland is staying after much speculation he would be moving on in favor of Steve Yzerman.

2 year extension for a coach of a team that will finish bottom 5?

So that must mean Yzerman is going to be the next Oilers GM.

Seattle is where I see him going.

Maybe Yzerman was just ok with the extension?

I don’t think this definitely proves anything

The Wings aren't going to be a contender in 2 years even with Yzerman at the helm.

Blashill has not had the greatest roster to deal with.

Things happen fast in the NHL now. I wouldn't bet on the Wings being bad for 2 more years. They've already got a nice #1C.

Not sure I see it the same way. Wouldn’t surprise me if Holland “unofficially” consulted with Yzerman on this. Still think that transition is going to happen sooner than later.

Is wins really the best way to judge the coach of a rebuilding team? Babcock had the Leafs bottom 5 one year, don’t think it stained his resume

I think that for rebuilding teams stability is important. A few years of the same coach, even if they are not the best is better than switching coaches too often. The turn around of players will be chaos enough.

Blashill has done well, I think... Bertuzzi, Mantha, Larkin, Athanasiou, and Hronek have all taken big steps under him

Obviously, wins aren't a factor in determining success. I just don't see what value he's added to that team during his tenure. They don't seem to be good at any particular thing, and while some young players have had success, it isn't a monumental success in my eyes.

I just see him as a pawn honestly. A stop gap coach that they can fire once the players develop enough to need a real coach. Not unlike Hartley, but at least Hartley had them playing above their talent level.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just the way I see it.
