Default Sabres' Eichel suspended two games

NEW YORK — Buffalo Sabres forward was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Sunday for an illegal check to the head of Colorado Avalanche forward Carl Soderberg.

Eichel was assessed a minor penalty for the illegal check in the second period of the Sabres' 3-0 loss at Colorado on Saturday. The suspension will cost him $107,527.

The 22-year-old centre has 25 goals and 47 assists in 65 games this season.

I guess Eichel didn't much care for the previous hit on himself:

The homerism on that play-by-play is insane. Praising the hit on Eichel, then getting indignant when he lays a hit back. Both are suspendable.

It's a headshot, just like the Voracek hit. Eichel has plenty of opportunity to play the body strongly without hitting Soderberg in the head. Instead, he shifts his weight and delivers the check straight to the head. If you have any genuine desire to reduce concussions and increase the long-term quality of life for players who suffer head injuries, this is the type of hit you have to suspend players for.

I look forward to the Edmonton media coming to the defense of Eichel and lamenting the lack of 'star' treatment.

Absolutely. Those Avs commentators are an utter joke.

I call bs. He actually shifts his weight back a bit as he anticipates the collision with Soderberg who has his head down. There is absolutely no intent there at all, Soderberg literally puts himself in an inevitable head collision. If that is the way it will be called if I am coaching in a seven game series against a guy like Marner or Ovechkin I just tell one of my fourth liners to skate into him with their head down so they will be gone for a couple games of the series.

Please keep in mind that this is the NHL, and therefore the rules and enforcement in place throughout the 82 game season changes once the playoffs begin. For the betterment of game management and confusion of players/coaches/fans.

Watch the Sportnet video. It shows shoulder to head very clearly
