Looked at his stats to see how he was doing and thought, "Wow a .918 save percentage isn't bad." Turns out that's middle of the pack in the KHL.

Still think he had all the tools to play in the nhl. Was very close ro breaking out as a starter IMO. At least would've been as good as Elliott

Scuttlebutt is he had some other issues that held him back.... beyond talent.

Depends. Are they playing against Putin?

It's also middle of the pack on the NHL.

I still wonder how and why he wasn’t given more of an opportunity. I’d rather he be here still than Smith . Both struggled but I think Ortio was mishandled.

And it’s not the first time we’ve seen that happen with players in Calgary. Too late now.
Well never know now. I actually am happy to see guys like McElhinney doing well. And before that Gigeure

I really thought we had something in Ortio. I was going nuts we weren’t playing him more often.

@Transplant99: what are the rumors about him? Lazy? Disliked in the room?

For the Sake of comparison.

Joni Ortio: 37GP 15-15-5 .901Sv% 2.66 GAA

David Rittich 35 GP 16-8-4 .912Sv% 2.63 GAA

I think there was questions about his work ethic as much as anything.

Yeah, and Ortio was in the immediate post blow up mess, while Rittich this year is behind a bloody good team, dare I say a contender.

No, you really don't. Ortio's KHL numbers are right in the same ballpark as former Flames goalies Danny Taylor and Henrik Karlsson. The gap between the KHL and the NHL is massive.

In any event, I always liked Ortio, and am glad to see him having some success.

Ortio had flashes of brilliance while he was here. I honestly thought he was going to pop and become a star in the NHL, it seemed like he had the tools to do so. I was shocked to see him let go but maybe that was due to other issues that someone has mentioned who knows. I always liked his game tho

Ortio's team is also 19th (out of 25 teams) in GA and in the bottom half of GF. His numbers are also similar to Mikko Koskinen's numbers two years ago, and Koskinen is NHL caliber.

If he's willing to come back and none of the youngin's step up, I wouldn't mind seeing Ortio given a try at backup once Mike Smith is gone.

I always like Ortio. I felt like we stunted his ability and miss managed him. As we do most goalies.

It is a wonder more goalies drafted by the flames don’t hold out and try to re-enter the draft. What a wasteland of would be nhl goalies the flames have.
