Vegas signs Schmidt to a 6 yr extension starting in 2019/20 ($5.95 mil AAV)
Was in the final year of his current $2.25 mil AAV contract and still suspended for PEDs.

Nate Schmidt is a hybrid. Unique and invaluable in his balance.
An elite skater who uses that ability to both defend and create offense, Schmidt is not ordinary at either end of the ice. The 27-year-old led all Golden Knights skaters in ice time last season averaging 22:14 per game while scoring five goals and adding 31 assists. All while he and D partner Brayden McNabb played the hardest minutes on the Golden Knights roster - drawing the opposition's top players every night.
The sixth-year pro has agreed to a six-year and $35.7 million contract extension which kicks in next season. The deal carries an average annual value of $5.95 million.

What? Doesn't that seem like an overpayment? He basically had one good year and he ain't that young.
I'd say at least one million too much if you are giving him 6 years.

He's like Brodie, moves the puck and skates well but gets pushed around along the boards and he also has a weak shot. $1.5m too much IMO

This seems like it has every possibility to backfire.

I think it's interesting they were willing to give this kind of deal to Schmidt but not William Karlsson

They seem pretty confident that his ability wasn't PED driven.

Nate Schmidt lives the dream. Gets to play for Vegas and go on a historic run that's likely never to be replicated by any team in any sport. Then gets suspended for using PEDs for 20 games. Loses out on a huge chunk of money. Only to sit back and chill, and get $35.7 million delivered on a silver platter.
Life is good Nate. Life is good.

McPhee is going from best to worst GM with some of his moves. Way too many of these Knight players got big money long term deals that seem too risky imo.

Yeah, for some odd reason he seems to be in a real rush to replicate the salary structure of some teams mired in a cap crunch right now. I guess he just couldn't handle the benefits of cap room. On the other hand, signing injured players and suspended players to huge deals is pretty creative management I guess.

Only 14 players signed for next season at a hit of over 72 million. McPhee has lost his mind. https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/goldenknights
Last years success has really scrambled setting this franchise up for long term success.

Vegas keeps signing some very average to above average players to huge deals. This franchise is going to be in trouble pretty quick.

Why not at least wait to see how he looks once he comes back?
Why the rush to sign him before he has even played this season? Maybe if they signed him really cheap I could understand but to sign him at this number it doesn't make sense.

Schmidt is a UFA to be, Karlsson is not. I assume that explains at least part of the reason.

Edit: It seems like CF doesn't actually have Schmidt's new contract factored into next year yet with him listed suspended.
So, 8 players with $1,350,000 I guess?

Does that include Clarkson's cap hit though?

Schmidt is a good Dman. Maybe very good. Certainly not a star or elite. The money and term seems right for a very good defenseman. Vegas needs him back, too. Guys like Colin Miller are having trouble with being moved up to new roles to make up for the void on the blue line. When Schmidt gets back and everyone is back in their proper places I expect Vegas to be much stronger.
