Default Crabgrass

Has anyone had success controlling crabgrass by letting it grow tall and brushing the crabgrass with a paint brush dipped in Roundup? I need to get this under control before it takes over my lawn. Any other advice is appreciated but I've heard that this works.

I'd be interested in this too - I've tried a few different products and nothing seems to work. I considered going round up on the area and then just re-seed, but the paintbrush idea sounds like a reasonable idea

do you use any kind of 'lawn maintenance' company to do stuff with your lawn?

i started using the weedman a few years ago at the recommendation of a buddy of mine who owns a landscaping company.

one of the products they offer is crab grass treatment - they put some stuff down once/year. it's expensive but my lawn is now pretty much crab grass free (and it had TONS of it). i found it took a year or two for it to be really noticeable. with less and less crab grass in the lawn there is less and less crab grass to 'procreate'.

Funny you should post that. We use Weedman and they're coming tomorrow. They just phoned to advise us and I asked if they can kill crabgrass. They said they have nothing for crabgrass and that my idea could work if applied properly.

Germination. That will prevent new seeds getting a foothold, it's a pre-emergent. It won't kill your existing crabgrass. Apparently you can use corn gluten for the same effect. I haven't tried it, but might give it a shot. Oh, and it is possible you have quakcrass, not crabgrass. Which is apparently harder to get rid of. It's what I've got.

Is it actually crabgrass or is it tall fescue? (EDIT: Or some other perennial grass, as mentioned by Fuzz.) I just went through this learning process last month. Crabgrass is an annual that germinates from seed, so you probably wouldn't see it in your lawn this early in June, and definitely not in May. Real crabgrass can be selectively treated, but tall fescue cannot. I determined I had tall fescue, and did the brushing method, and had some success with that.

https://www.organolawn.com/lawn-care...vs-tall-fescue
  • Crabgrass is an annual grass that is lime green or lighter colored and typically germinates in June and July.
  • Crabgrass can easily be controlled after it emerges using Drive XLR8, our bindweed and crabgrass killer.
  • Coarse tall fescue is a perennial grass that is darker colored grass that is in the lawn all year long.
  • Coarse tall fescue cannot be selectively controlled. The only way to kill coarse tall fescue is to kill it with a product like roundup and then reseed the damaged areas.

I always thought crab grass was the thick stuff that grows 3x faster then the regular grass. I killed mine with the paint brush trick.
