Default What Flames will be playing in May at IIHF World Championship in Denmark

Not sure on the selection process this year but read a story that Clayton Keller is hoping to play for Team USA.

If the teams are made up of the non-playoff NHL players as in the past which Flames will be playing for their country:

Canada

Bennett
Jankowski
Monahan
Ferland
Brouwer
Brodie
Giordano
Hamilton
Hamonic
Stone
Smith

US

Gaudreau
Shore
Gillies
Tkachuk

Czech Republic

Frolik
Hrivik
Rittich

Finland

Valimaki

Sweden

Backlund
Andersson
Kylington

I don't see any of the Flames competing this year in the IIHF.

The ones Canada would want on their roster are injured or probably will decline.

More to the point, a couple of weeks in Copenhagen sounds fantastic. Wish I was going.

I know the usual crowd will come into this thread and thumb their nose at this tournament, and there are lots of good reasons why players decline to paprticipate.

But I have always believed that players that do go to these things are demonstrating a certain passion for the game that maybe does manifest in their NHL play. So I like it when Flames accept their invitations.

I like the idea of them getting to experience a longer hockey season than most of the Flames have experienced. I also like the idea that playing in this tournament shows that they love to play hockey.

What is Hamilton's type? Why would he not play in this tournament?

Hamilton will get beat out by Brad Richards.

Much better defencemen.

I'd be happy for Bennett and Jankowski to go (for development purposes) but I'm not sure if they would even be invited...

I am honored that you follow my posts so intently.

That is a good comparison... Now there are a lot of similar players that would be fair comparison.

A majority of Laine's 19 PP goals come for the D position.... That would neutralize the Hamilton as the top goal scoring defenseman argument and give Laine a lot of Norris trophy votes

I stand corrected : ESPN has him being born in Zilina, Czechoslovakia.

I think Gaudreau will likely go. And possibly Backlund, Hamilton, Frolik and Rittich.

I hope Johnny won’t , he went last year and I would not want another one of our best players getting injured going into the offseason.

As far as the Canadian team one would have to think Gio and Hamilton will get asked. They may look at Smith for a veteran goaltender presence. As for the forwards I'm not so sure as Monahan won't be available and I suppose the could look at Bennett if they want to bring in a younger player to play on the 4th line.

I think Backlund has a hand/arm injury... Brouwer has been taking too many faceoffs in place of Backlund for there not to be something going on there.

It's not necessarily inaccurate. It was still Czechoslovakia back in 1991 when Hrivik was born.

Based on the mountains of heart that's coming out of that dressing room (according to Gulutzan) I assume it would take 2 broken legs AND a Tertian Fever to keep any of our Hockey Heroes of the ice. They are probably arm wrestling for spots as we speak
