Gaudreau and Smith named NHL's 1st and 2nd stars of the week
Kristen Odland @Kristen_Odland
Johnny Gaudreau and Mike Smith were named the #NHL's first and second stars of the week. Gaudreau had two goals and six assists in four games. Smith stopped 104 of 108 shots against, going 3-0-0 with a 1.32 goals-against average and .963 save percentage.
Quote:
Calgary Flames left wing Johnny Gaudreau, Calgary Flames goaltender Mike Smith and Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Phil Kessel have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Jan. 14.
FIRST STAR – JOHNNY GAUDREAU, LW, CALGARY FLAMES
Gaudreau led the NHL with six assists and eight points in four games (2-6—8) to propel the Flames (25-16-4, 54 points) to a perfect week, helping the team extend its overall winning streak to seven contests. He recorded his fifth career three-assist performance in a 3-2 overtime victory against the Minnesota Wild Jan. 9. Gaudreau then scored the decisive goal in back-to-back games, posting 1-1—2 in a 5-1 triumph over the Tampa Bay Lightning Jan. 11 and his 16th career game-winner in a 4-2 victory against the Florida Panthers Jan. 12. He closed the week with two assists in a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes Jan. 14. The 24-year-old Salem, N.J., native ranks second in the NHL with 15-39—54 in 45 outings this season, including 2-11—13 during an active seven-game point streak.
SECOND STAR – MIKE SMITH, G, CALGARY FLAMES
Smith stopped 104 of 108 shots against, going 3-0-0 with a 1.32 goals-against average and .963 save percentage to help the Flames sweep a road trip of at least four games for the first time since Dec. 9-18, 2007 (6-0-0). He made 33 saves in each of his first two contests, a 3-2 overtime win against the Minnesota Wild Jan. 9 and a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning Jan. 11. Smith then turned aside 38 of 39 shots in a 4-1 triumph against the Carolina Hurricanes Jan. 14, capping Calgary’s perfect road swing. The 35-year-old Kingston, Ont., native owns a 20-13-3 record in 38 appearances this season (2.46 GAA, .924 SV%, 2 SO). That includes a personal six-game winning streak dating to Dec. 31 (1.99 GAA, .941 SV%).
THIRD STAR – PHIL KESSEL, RW, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Kessel registered 2-3—5 in two games, scoring the winning goal in each contest to lift the Penguins (24-19-3, 51 points) into the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. He collected 1-2—3, his fourth three-point performance of the season, in a 4-1 victory against the Detroit Red Wings Jan. 13. Kessel then added 1-1—2, including his 53rd career game-winning goal, in a 5-2 triumph over the New York Rangers Jan. 14. In doing so, the 30-year-old Madison, Wis., native became the third U.S.-born player in NHL history to reach the 20-goal milestone in 10 or more consecutive seasons (2008-09 – present). Kessel leads the Penguins and ranks eighth in the League with 20-32—52 through 46 outings in 2017-18.

"But, but McDavid" cried Principe and Remanda, "he's been a top 3 star in every game that the Oilers have player". Their whines sounding not unlike a wet puppy, "We know we put him there"

When your top forward and starting goaltender are the two starts of the week it's pretty safe to say the team had a pretty great week.

Meanwhile, TheScore app released their power rankings which has Oilers in 10th place and Flames in 22nd. Pathetic.

Holy ####. You're right. And they previously had the Flames 30th. Crazy.

Johnny looked in the zone yesterday. Was dangerous every time he had the puck.
If it wasn't for that cooling off stretch in December he'd be threatening the #1 over-all spot.
Been a great year for him so far. Hope he keeps it up and if he does he definitely deserves some Hart consideration.
Smith has been a revelation back there for us. I was lukewarm on the trade when it was made but it's been a home run. His competitiveness and battling are off the charts. You can tell how badly he wants to win and I think that's going to pretty valuable for us in April and beyond.

LOL!! so I guess Edmonton looking like its old self is a good thing?
Edmonton looked like its old self Saturday night in a big road win against the Golden Knights in overtime, and any team with the reigning Hart Trophy winner is always a threat, regardless of the rest of the roster's flaws. - Gold-Smith

That quote from Gold-Smith (whoever that is) demonstrates an ubelievalble lack of understanding the game of hockey.
But who gives a rats arse about power rankings. Nobody on earth even knows what a power ranking is or means.
Great weeks from Gaudreau and Smith. A well deserved honour for sure. I really hope the team can keep rolling after the break.

Too bad Hamilton wasn't the 3rd star (think he'd have a legit shot at it). Never seen a team sweep all 3 stars before.

Pretty awesome and well deserved.
I wonder how many times 2 players of the same team have received this recognition in the same week/month.

Lol old selves? The 'old' oilers I remember were throwing draft parties yearly for their lottery picks. Sucking is their default form, whereas last year was a flash in the pan. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that what you'd call one good season in the last 12? Don't know why these people put so much stock into one season.

When the Flames top forward and Goalie are named 1&2 player of the week while on a 7 game winning streak tearing it up yet the Score has the Greasers ranked at 10th in NHL and the Flames at 22nd it makes the credibility of their rankings a total mockery. Edmonton sympathizers that is pretty obvious.
Reality Flames have climbed to 2nd in the pacific into a playoff position and the Greasers remain far out of the playoffs 13th in the West, 25th overall.
I will be curious to see how the new TSN and Sports Net rankings look. Proves rankings are not very valid if the writers are biased.
