Ducks Patrick Eaves has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. Was diagnosed early

A description of the disorder:

Quote:
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms.

These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing your whole body. In its most severe form Guillain-Barre syndrome is a medical emergency. Most people with the condition must be hospitalized to receive treatment.

Going to lay this out here. Eaves is in a Newport Beach hospital and has been since last week. Was diagnosed early and is out of ICU.

Eaves is expected to make a full recovery. He had felt symptoms of weakness. The disorder is very serious if not caught early. His was.

Yikes. GB is really scary. Glad they caught it early in his case.

Guillain-Barre is very mysterious and very serious. Very astute of the doctors to make the correct diagnosis so quickly. It can often confound clinicians because it isn't common and looks like a lot of other neurological conditions until it spreads to large sections of the PNS.

Weirdly, I've met several people in practice who suffered from it either in the past or currently. It's a scary one for sure, but when caught in time, people often recover well.

Remember his interviews from the playoffs last year, a very well spoken and likable guy. Wish him the best

If the robustness of this man's beard has any correlation to his toughness he will kick this thing's ass. Best wishes to him and his family and I hope to see him back ASAP.

Even know they caught it early the prognosis isn't very good for a return to hockey, lets hope his quality of life going forward isn't to far impaired by this brutal disease

I wonder if he suffered a Campylobacter infection (very common foodborne pathogen), which is one of the leading antecedents of GB. We believe this occurs because sugar molecules on the bacterial surface can sometimes mimic sugar molecules on human cells. So after the immune system goes after the bacteria, it will start to attack nervous tissues.
