I am employed but don't get any health benefits from work. My wife works as a contractor from home.

We're thinking about getting some 3rd party health, dental, etc and there seems to be many options out there.. but are any of them really any better than simply pay-as-you-go? Also might look at short and long term disability stuff.

Anyone have any good recommendations or personal experiences?

My experiences:

We set up a private health plan at work. (i'm guessing your wife could do this as a contractor).

Costs a couple hundred to set up, and adds 10% or so to your expenses.

The upside is it can cover almost anything (including things health plans can't touch) and you pay for the expenses with pre-tax dollars.

Whether or not thats a good deal is just math.

Disability insurance is expensive as hell (or seemed to me) and I didn't do it.

By comparison, through my wife we spent about $1500 for blue cross health/dental and disability for 1 year (family coverage on the health/dental).
