Citations are issued by the National Hockey League Hockey Operations Department, which tracks all games, logs all penalties for diving or embellishment, and flags all plays not called on the ice that in its opinion were deserving of such a penalty. A Citation is issued once Hockey Operations, through its internal deliberations, is convinced that a player warrants sanction.
Gaudreau was issued a Warning following an incident flagged by NHL Hockey Operations during NHL Game No. 514 against Vancouver on Dec. 23. His second Citation, which triggered the $2,000 fine, was issued for an incident at 8:06 of the second period during NHL Game No. 962 against NY Islanders on March 5. Offsetting minor penalties were assessed on the play, to Islanders forward Josh Ho-Sang for holding and to Gaudreau for embellishment.
The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

I wonder how much the refs have been fined for letting Minni breaks his finger..

Clip of 'the incident': https://www.nhl.com/video/gaudreau-h...912/c-50215003
looked like a nothing thing. went down on his knees with a little bump, while holding the guys stick.

So Gaudreau has 4 PIM this year.
Both penalties have been for embellishment.

Probably can't win the Lady Byng even if that's the lowest total PMs of the contenders.

Pretty sure he was called for hi-sticking. But it was actually Monahan's stick that clipped the opponent.

Would love it if made public the NHL fine to ref who didn't call obvious penalty shot on Johnny's break away couple games ago.
This should work both ways.

I hate this. It's way too canucky for my liking.
That said, it also pisses me off how the league is entirely arbitrary with how it assesses infractions against "star" players. Guys could hack Johnny's hands off with a chainsaw and it probably wouldn't get called, but if someone so much throws a scary look at poster boy McDingleberry up the highway it becomes an international incident.
What I see here is a player getting frustrated with the lack of equality who then chooses to do what he feels he has to do in order to get someone to take notice. Johnny is going to have to find a balance here because it seems like the refs have already tagged him as a whiner so they're less likely to give him the benefit of the doubt in these situations. This is similar to Crosby's first few seasons where he was constantly complaining to the officials. (although admittedly even then he got way more calls than Johnny does) He eventually figured it out and so will Johnny, but I hate seeing stuff like this around the team.

What a joke. Can we not ever have good refs in the NHL?

I think they are saying the Vancouver "incident" didn't get a penalty call.

I just came to post that a $2,000 fine is a pretty hilariously meaningless for a player making $82,317.07 per game.

Don't know what the Vancouver incident was, but the penalty he received against the Islanders was a horrible call.
