Default Bye Week Cap Manuvering

I found this loophole in the Salary cap interesting...I hadn't noticed if other teams exploited it.

The Blackhawks assigned ALL their 2-way contract guys to the Rock, for the week.

The total cap savings of having Hinostrosa, Schmaltz, Forsling, and Hartman in the Rock for the 5 days turns out to be about $477K. For a cap strapped team, like the 'Hawks, this could be a HUGE savings.

I'm sure those guys loved not getting the break to go on a vacation. That should piss both the league and players association off.

With talk about the bye week going bye bye next year, I'm sure this won't become much of an issue. Bye week is a stupid idea. Extend the Christmas holiday by two days, and the all-star break by two days. They can't practice during either break or send players to the farm either. Done.

Not to mention the decrease in pay cheque for being in the minor vs. NHL for a lot of those 2 way contracts.

Although, they are 20-year-olds who get to play professional hockey for a living at 600k to 1mil per year with at least 2 months off between seasons, so... you know.

Doesn't NHL do a per game pay? Meaning they technically make more as they miss no NHL games?

I would think that there is a roster freeze at Christmas time with nobody going anywhere

NHL contracts are paid out by a per day on the NHL roster basis.

This is nothing really new, cap teams have been sending down players during long breaks for years now.

I think a few years ago the Kings were even sending down a poor player on non-game days and then recalling him for game days to save some cap space.

I know people don't like it, but these guys already work full time in the gym, meetings, community involvement, and travel during the hockey season. Any other workplace has mandatory days off, and the tighter the schedule (ie, 21 days straight on the rigs), the longer the time off.

Having a longer Christmas break doesn't help them in February and March when the schedule is tight

How much of their time from April/May/June through end of August is mandated work days by their team/league?

24 on / 3 off isn't all that much time off.

And no NHL players are not full time in the gym/meetings/community involvement all the time.

When did the Hawks move their farm team to St. John's?

Heh...of course, the Rock refers to the ford on the Rock River, where a town grew...home of the Rockford Icehogs...I didn't realize that New Scotland also had a "the Rock".

"The Rock" is a nickname for Newfoundland. It's capital, St. John's, is currently the home of Montreal's farm team.

Heh...my bad...I got St. John's and Halifax confused...in my mind, I had St. John's as Nova Scotia's capital, and Halifax as Newfoundland.

No worries, I never expected an American to know anything about foreign geography

Very cursory Geography courses for Canada...It's north of us, its capital is Ottawa, and the names of the Provinces (but, really, no reference to locations). The Maritimes are brushed over quickly!
