Default Kerry Fraser's reply to my Gaudreau empty net question

It looks like TSN has done away with Kerry Fraser's "C'mon Ref" feature at their site, but Kerry Fraser has his own website now and he still takes questions from fans regarding referee's decisions and rule clarifications.

I decided to ask a question about the Johnny Gaudreau empty net against the Sharks on Wednesday night and not automatically be awarded a goal and he replied to it on his website. if interested, click the following:

Thanks for asking. That is about as strongly as I have seen Kerry Fraser disagree with a refereeing decision; referees union and all of that.

At some point, all of these decisions that go against the Flames stop being a coincidence.

You should write him to ask about the Wideman bias!

Given the spirit, intent and language of rule 57.4, this is about as clear an awarded goal situation as it gets.

I hated Titanium Hair when he was an active official, but in retrospect he's by far and away the best we'll see in our lifetimes. I would love for the NHL to bring Kerry in to overhaul the officiating systems.

Preach!

Not enough due diligence paid to the rules when it comes to the Flames these days. It's embarrassing, because I actually hate being one of those conspiracy theorist sounding fans that can't get over how the games are officiated, but how do you explain things like this away? Do your damned jobs right so we don't have to come off like a bunch of cry babies. Please and thanks.

Is the NHL able to review it and award a goal retroactively? I know they can "change" who was credited with a goal after the fact.

There is a small chance that GF/GA could be a tie-breaker in the standings (I think... might have changed), but for a player, it could mean hitting or not hitting bonuses.

Doesn't change the outcome of the game, so I don't see why not.

But it's not like the league to care about these things after the fact, so probably a useless suggestion.

Good old Dan O'Halloran. He's hated the Flames for a long time.

Which is made even more interesting considering the Sharks received a penalty shot late in the game for an infraction that I consider a borderline play by Brodie.

I'm kinda at the point where the NHL should just cut costs in these tough economic times and take it back to 1 referee per game as 2 referees don't seem to be very effective at making calls.

That was awesome thanks. Even better was Fraser calling him Johnny Hockey in the article.

I think the irony is that here on CP, we like to complain about how Johnny gets slashed, knocked down all the time with no penalty call. He finally manages to draw a call from the ref in this empty net situation (yay!), but it's the wrong call -- should have been an awarded goal.

I know everyone likes to blame Wideman but I wonder if it's deeper than that. The Flames publicly disagreed with the suspension and were pretty outspoken throughout the process with comments made by both Treliving and Burke. It's possible the officials have taken that personally and the Flames in their mind have downplayed the severity of the incident.

Since the fiasco the Flames have gone from one of the least penalized team to the most penalized team despite very little in roster turnover (although Tkachuk has certainly added a fair bit but that's somewhat cancelled out by the fact he draws more penalties). I'm not wearing a tin foil hat and am not screaming that its a conspiracy but it certainly appears most nights the Flames are not getting the benefit of the doubt when it comes to penalty calls as Wednesday was garbage officiating and it seems we have seen more of that this season than years past.
