Yeah, I feel your struggle. I'm in the same boat, my wife has had the same home phone number since the dawn of time and our entire (worldwide) family uses it, but I want it gone. Its expensive for something we rarely ever use.

Who is your tv/internet provider? We ported our number over to Shaw and pay $15/mnth, down from like $40 with Telus, or are you looking for even cheaper?

I was on shaw and when I called to cancel my phone with them I got it down to $5 a month but I still got rid of it. It is just not useful anymore.

You'll get no argument from me. I was in the same position as the OP and this was a happy medium. I'd love to ditch the land line. The ONLY thing about keeping it that made sense was the dirtcheap long distance. I have family in Australia, she has family in the States so that much made sense. At the time anyways, now cell companies are doing a decent job of providing competitive long distance plans.

Same here.
I'm on Telus, called to cancel, and they gave me a $10 plan, no bells or whistles, just province-wide calls and call display.

Is there a way to port a home phone number to a cell phone? That would be a nice solution.

I'm sure there are others, but you can with these guys and the rates are really good.

We switched our home phone over to Nettalk Duo. $42 ($48?) per YEAR.
It cuts out every now and again, but all in all its been great. Get voicemail and call display. All you really need for a home phone, at least for us

You can even port the number to a VOIP service; like a free one such as Fongo. That way you still own the number in case you want to go back. Also if some long lost uncle calls wanting to add you to the will, etc.

What the heck? $600? I pay less on a cell plan with data.

Fido (for instance) offers $18 Unlimited Canada wide calling, or for $20 unlimited Canada/US calling. You can port a number.

You just have to buy some $40 box with no wall jack etc. If you move, the phone number follows you no problem.

I'm guesing there's other companies out there offering such a service.

The Fongo idea isn't bad either.

If it wasn't for my wife's home business our landline would be gone. She doesn't want to give her personal (cell) # to clients.

You can port your home phone number to a cell phone so that is one option.
Your best bet though is to just call and threaten to cancel.

$40 from Shaw or Telus tends to become $10 per month pretty quickly

15 a month for us, so not a huge deal. But, that would another bottle or two of scotch if she would agree do drop it.

FreePhoneLine is the best bet hands down. Buy a cheap voip box, buy the unlock key and port your phone number over. Higher initial cost, but than never pay for home phone again. Free calling in Canada, and dirt cheap calling everywhere else. I've been using it for 2 years now and you can't even tell a difference from a traditional phone line. Pays for itself pretty fasthttps://www.freephoneline.ca/ |

Ooma is a great wifi system. Crystal clear voice. It allows you to port your existing number over and add another if you like. Free North American calling is part of cost and very cheap to Europe.
Have had no issues over the last three years and saved a ton of cash.

We use Rogers mobile home phone. $10/month and if you want, you literally can take it with you anywhere.
