Default Sportsnet 2008 draft re-do

Pretty cool, but several guys have our very own TJ Brodie going in the top 10 if there was a re-draft. Considering Brodie was taken 114th overall, that's pretty high praise for Brodie and our scouting staff

Saw this. Like that Brodie was included. I had Karlsson going 1st overall.

Interesting that none of them had Stamkos staying at 1st overall. I think Doughty is an amazing player but I'd peg Stamkos ahead of him. It just happens that Doughty has played on teams that have had more success. Also, Karlsson has more individual accomplishments than Doughty.

Yes, but Doughty is the more complete defenseman and arguably the best at that position in the league. The (arguably) top D-man in the league or one of the better centers in the league?... I'd pick the D-man every time.

I think the main reason why they'd pick Doughty over Stamkos is the fact that Stamkos' injury and already slowed production at this age has people thinking that his golden years have been bright but short.

I don't think it is praise at all for our scouting staff - TJ is a later round pick that worked out.

how many other guys did our scouts miss out on in this draft?

He still gets shafted a bit. No way you take Hamonic over him. What a deep defensive draft!

Are you actually trying to spin stealing Brodie in the 4th round as a negative? Let me guess, snagging Gaudreau deserves no credit either because they didn't hit home runs on all their other picks that year?

2. Stamkos
3. Doughty

I would put Stamkos at #1 still. multi 50 goal seasons including a 60 goal season. Besides Ovechkin, it's been ~20 years since the last 60 goal scorer.

Yup. Me too. Karlsson is close. I see TJ Brodie in the top 10 too, but why is Myers ahead of him? Baffling.

Stamkos is not ahead of Doughty. If the re-draft is done today then Stamkos probably goes third.

The thing with the redrafts, is that it doesn't account for the development time that many defenceman need to mature. At the time of the draft, Doughty, Bogosian, and Pietrangelo were the most mature of the defenders at the time. At that point in time Luke Schenn really did look like a can't miss type of player.

Often at draft time it's a debate about do you take defenceman X this high because in many drafts you can find a defenceman with a later pick. History seems to show that top scoring forwards, and centers in particular tend to be those top 10 picks.

So as much as we can say the defence position is needed in the NHL, does that change the fact that when evaluating 18 year old players, the level of development in defenceman is still a much greater unknown.

No one takes Holtby 1st? I would have to think about it.

I take Doughty 1st, and it's not even close.

all I am assaying is that TJ was a 4th round pick that worked out.

if the scouts were really that smart, then they would have been pushing him as a higher pick for the flames (I will concede that perhaps they were and they were overruled).

to summarize Calgary 2008 draft was as follows:

Neimsz, Wahl, Bouma, Larson, Brodie, Grantham and Deilbert - so the flames got meaningful mileage out of 2 out of 7 guys (~30%). if the scouting staff were really that smart then why were they so wrong about neimsz?

can't celebrate the wins without ignoring the misses

as I recall datsuyk (sp?) was an 8th round pick - if the detriots scouts were smart then would he not have been a much higher pick?

to me the draft is a crapshoot, but if you are really smart and talented at evaluating players, you can increase your odds somewhat.
