When I made the trade to bring in a solid #1 goalie in Martin Jones, it came at a big cost as Erik Karlsson went the other way. We managed to get a solid D back in the trade (Matt Niskanen) but at the time we had full intention of flipping him immediately to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Quote:
"Yes we had two deals in place, one to bring in Jones, and another to flip Niskanen in a deal for Suter". That was supposed to happen right after the other but it never worked out that way. In fact, we initially declined to do the deal with Niskanen in it and were about to go in another direction until the new GM of the Jackets (Inufie) proposed a deal that helped me pull the trigger."

However, the CPHL had other plans and nixed the Niskanen/Suter deal right away. We tried again but failed. Then again but failed. At the last moment and realizing we were kinda stuck because the plan didn't work out as intended, a deal was struck and the league approved. The deal is as follows:
To SJ:
Ryan Suter
To Columbus:
Matt Niskanen
Joel Armia
2017 2nd
2018 2nd
More than we wanted to pay and we think Niskanen is under valued in this league considering he is younger and on a better, much more manageable contract than Suter while only giving away 4OV. Bad habits die hard however and we wanted back a guy we originally traded for when I was the GM of the Jackets.
Needless to say, the league stood firm on their love for Suter and wouldn't budge until the Jackets got a return that they thought was 'fair'.
The moral of the story is, don't try and put complex, multi-team deals together if a new GM is involved, it probably won't work out the way you intend it to.
Thanks to Inufie for his patience.
